Weather: Some late sunshine, but cooler tonight

BBC Weather

The patchy cloud will fade away through the evening, giving some late sunshine. A quiet, dry night will follow, with starry skies in places allowing temperatures to dip a little lower than recent nights, especially in the valleys of the West Pennine Moors.

Some cloud will bubble up but there will still be sunny spells.

Murder accused 'bought stun gun in Germany'

Two women accused of murdering a businesswoman in her home bought a 500,000 volt stun gun and some pepper spray in December last year, Preston Crown Court has heard.

Sadie Hartley, 60, was stunned with a cattle prod and stabbed at her property in Rossendale in January. 

Katrina Walsh, 56, and Sarah Williams, 35, both from Chester, deny murdering the mother-of-two.  

Anna Schanz from Security Discount Germany, a company based in Darmstadt, told the court via videolink that Ms Williams had wanted to buy a one million volt stun gun but the pair bought a 500,000 volt one and two or three cans of pepper spray. 

Mrs Shanz told the court she had demonstrated how to use the stun gun.

'Fuel poor' residents can apply for £2.25m central heating grants

Homeowners and tenants in Lancashire are able to apply for part of a new fund to provide first time central heating systems to properties of “fuel poor” residents.

The £2.25m pot is expected to supply and fit 900 new central heating systems to residents eligible to apply.

The Central Heating Fund, secured by the Cosy Homes in Lancashire partnership, will be managed by Blackburn with Darwen Council, but will be open to all qualifying residents from the 14 local council areas in Lancashire.

A motorcyclist killed in a crash with a car in Lancashire had "so much to live for", his father said in a tribute.

Connor Whittingham, 23, dead at the scene of the collision on Preston Road, Whittle-le-Woods, at about 14:45 BST on Sunday.

Police are investigating the cause including whether speed was a factor.

Mr Whittingham's father Paul said: "Connor loved his motorbikes" and hopes his death "will raise awareness... of the risks that speed can have."

Attempted murder arrest after stabbing on Fleetwood street

A 43-year-old man from Fleetwood has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a number of men were injured following an incident on Hatfield Avenue.

Emergency services found a man on the street with a wound to his neck at about 12:20.

Police said he was taken by air ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital where his condition is described as serious.

Two other men also received less serious injuries during the incident.

Firefighters tackle commercial building fire in Blackburn

Firefighters from Blackburn and Darwen have tackled a commercial building fire at Sett End Road West in Blackburn. 

The cause of the fire, which started in an industrial oven this morning, is now being investigated by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

£25m Blackpool centre may 'bring back party conferences'

A new £25m conference centre in Blackpool could be key to bringing party conferences back to the resort, said the council leader.

Outline plans have been submitted to develop the Winter Gardens site including a state-of-the-art conference hall for 2,000 delegates.

The centre would be linked to the Empress Ballroom and Opera House to form a joint capacity of up to 7,000.

Thornton home sealed off after 'body in garden' tip-off

Police investigating reports of a body buried in a garden are deciding whether to begin excavations.

Lancashire Police have cordoned off the home in Thornton, near Blackpool, following information received in a tip-off. 

Officers have removed vegetation from the garden of the house in Knowsley Crescent and put up forensic tents. 

The force said it was carrying out an assessment to decide whether the garden should be considered a crime scene.

Broadcaster Ranvir Singh named as new Chancellor of UCLan

TV presenter Ranvir Singh has been named as the new Chancellor of the University of Central Lancashire.

The announcement was made to graduating students at a ceremony yesterday at Preston Guild Hall.

Former BBC Radio Lancashire journalist Ms Singh, who was born in Preston and studied at UCLan, will take up the post officially in the autumn.

Police have released CCTV images of people they would like to speak to in connection with a burglary at the Walmer Bridge Spar and Post Office in the early hours of 28 June.

Police said three masked men entered the store on Liverpool Old Road and made attempts to steal cigarettes and tried to break into an ATM machine.

They escaped in an Audi estate car which was later recovered on the M6 northbound near to Leyland following a high-speed police pursuit.
