  1. Two fires at same warehouse site in BIrkenhead

    Fire crews remain at the scene of two blazes at a warehouse site in Birkenhead.

    The first fire started last night at about 16:50 in an unoccupied warehouse on the A41, New Chester Road.

    Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) said a large quantity of waste was on fire in a single-storey warehouse, but the blaze was extinguished at 20:40.

    This morning, just before 07:00, crews were called to a second fire at the same site - on the first floor in the office area.

    Five engines attended and the fire was put out at about 07:40.

    A MFRS spokesman said firefighters were still at the scene, checking for hot spots and dampening down the site.

  2. MP blames hospital's poor A&E performance on lack of funds

    A hospital in Cheshire is being starved of essential funding, according to its local MP.

    Speaking in the House of Commons, the Labour MP for Crewe and Nantwich, Laura Smith, said a fifth of patients going to Leighton Hospital's A&E had to wait more than four hours to be seen.

    She said the NHS trust running it wasn't able to get financial support to fund improvements of the emergency department.

    In response, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the government was providing extra funding for hospitals, with an extra £20.5bn annually by 2023.

  4. Warrington Wolves to sign ex-England rugby union centre Burrell

    Former England rugby union centre Luther Burrell will switch codes to join Super League side Warrington Wolves after leaving Northampton Saints.

    Burrell, 31, will join the Wire from Saints on 1 July in a deal until 2021.

    He won 15 caps for England and has made 158 appearances for Saints since joining from Sale Sharks in 2012.

    "I'm buzzing to get involved with rugby league and the Super League," said Burrell.

    "I've had some great times in rugby union, and I've had some adverse times, so for me to have this opportunity to play rugby league and see how far I can get with a great team is exciting."

  5. Masked men threaten residents with metal bars

    Four masked men armed with metal bars have broken into a house and threatened the people inside.

    Cheshire Police says the burglary happened on Monday night on Nantwich Road, Tilstone Bank, near Nantwich.

    They say the victims weren't hurt but were left very shaken as the men escaped with cash.

  8. Services disrupted after woman hit by tram

    Metrolink services between Manchester city centre, Oldham and Rochdale have been suspended indefinitely after a woman was hit by a tram.

    Emergency services were called to a collision between a pedestrian and a tram at Oldham Mumps about 08:10.

    The woman's injuries are not believed to be life threatening, Greater Manchester Police said.

    Transport for Greater Manchester said no tram services were running between Freehold and Rochdale Town Centre.

    A prospective takeover of Widnes Vikings has fallen through, with the Championship club subsequently unable to pay staff today.

    A consortium of investors was expected to take ownership of Widnes on Tuesday, but a "key member" of the group pulled out "at a late stage".

    The Vikings said in a club statement that "efforts to secure investment remain ongoing".

    Widnes were relegated from Super League in 2018, ending their seven-year stay.

  11. Woman hit by tram at Oldham Mumps Metrolink stop

    A woman has been taken to hospital with a head injury after being hit by a tram.

    Emergency services were called to a collision between a pedestrian and a tram at Oldham Mumps about 08:10 GMT.

    The woman's injuries are not believed to be life threatening, Greater Manchester Police said.

    Transport for Greater Manchester said there were no Metrolink services operating between Freehold and Rochdale Town Centre.

    Services will only operate between East Didsbury and Freehold until further notice, it tweeted.

    Buses are also being diverted around the area.

  12. Arrest over racist graffiti at flats

    A man has been arrested over racist graffiti daubed on doors at a block of flats in Greater Manchester.

    David Yamba, 10, found "No Blacks" painted on three doors in his block in Salford on 8 February, five days after his family had moved in.

    A 54-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage and is being questioned by police.

    David's father had earlier criticised police for a slow response.
