  2. Man charged with South Yorkshire rape four decades ago

    A man has been charged with rape and false imprisonment more than four decades after the alleged attack in South Yorkshire.

    Peter Pickering, 79 from Berkshire, is accused of abducting and raping a then 18 year old woman in the Deepcar area, near Stocksbridge in South Yorkshire, in 1972.

    A review of other unsolved cold cases, by West Yorkshire police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, uncovered evidence of the alleged "prolonged" attack which has now led to today's charges.

    Mr Pickering will appear via video link before Leeds Magistrates Court on 19 September.

  5. Leeds West Indian Carnival 2017: What you need to know

    The 50th Leeds West Indian Carnival will take place on Monday, full of amazing costumes, Caribbean music, stalls, fun fair rides and tasty food.

    We'll be here on Monday to give you a full flavour of the event, but here's all the stuff you need to know if you're planning on going:

    The basics

    • The parade starts at 13:00
    • It's based at Potternewton Park with the parade going around the street surrounding it
    • 2017 is the 50th anniversary of the Leeds Carnival which makes it the oldest in Europe
    • Up to 150,000 people are expected to turn out on the streets of Chapeltown
    • Organiser Arthur France initiated it after getting homesick for his native St Kitts and Nevis
    • He's been behind every one since - including this year's

    Road information

    If you're out and about on Bank Holiday Monday, and not planning on going to Carnival, it's probably best to avoid it all together because a lot of the roads nearby will be closed:

    • The council will close some roads from 17:00 on Sunday and reopen them at 05:30 on Tuesday
    • Roads affected will include Chapeltown Road, Harehills Lane, Harehills Avenue, Avenue Hill, Saville Drive and Mexborough Drive

  6. It's not just rock: Why Reading + Leeds is about more than moshpits

    Leeds Festival remains THE place to be for rock fans, hosting huge names each year. But, in 2017 it's clear the festival isn't just about massive mosh pits.


    Over the years, it's branched out from simply hosting rock heavyweights and now welcomes big electronic names on the BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage as well as a Who's Who of hip-hop on the BBC Radio 1Xtra Stage.

    Not only that, in the last couple of years, pop, rap, grime and dance's finest have started to take over the festival's Main Stage and NME/Radio 1 Stage.

  8. Listen: Bid deadline passes for North Yorkshire bus routes

    The deadline for companies wanting to bid for bus routes in North Yorkshire which were formerly operated by bus company Utopia has passed.

    Utopia Coaches, based at Sherburn in Elmet in North Yorkshire, provided services to rural communities between Selby, Drax, Tadcaster and York.

    But in a tweet on Wednesday evening the company announced it was going into liquidation about an hour after drivers said they received the text messages.

  11. South Yorkshire crash driver 'reported missing with children from Hampshire'

    A man arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of four children when the car he was driving crashed into a pub wall in Barnsley earlier this week was reported missing from Hampshire with the youngsters before the collision.

    The children, two girls aged seven and eight, and two boys aged nine months and 21 months, were seriously injured in the crash at Oxspring, near Penistone, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

    The 29-year-old driver, who was also injured, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.

    The man and children had been reported missing from Hythe in Hampshire the day before the crash, according to South Yorkshire Police.

  12. Unattended car breaks pelvis of four-year-old girl

    A four-year-old girl suffered a broken pelvis after being hit by an unattended car at a car park in Sheffield and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

    The car rolled forward from its parking bay at the Q-Park car park on Durham Road and down a ramp hitting four members of a family at about 16:40 yesterday, police say.

    A 65-year-old Sheffield woman and 37-year-old Sheffield woman also suffered a broken pelvis and remain in hospital in a stable condition.

    A four-year-old boy, who suffered minor injuries, has been released from hospital.

    Police are appealing for witnesses in the area at the time who may have seen what happened to come forward.

  14. Ian Watkins child abuse case: Witness 'wasn't take seriously' by police

    The QC who represented the woman from Doncaster whose evidence to police about child abuser Ian Watkins was ignored says South Wales Police were prejudiced against Joanne Mjadzelics' reports because of her "unconventional" background".

  15. Leeds Festival: Royal Republic pull out of main stage appearance

    Swedish band Royal Republic have announced they won't be playing on the main stage on Sunday at Leeds Festival:

    The band's management said in a Facebook post that all the members in the group are in "good health" but "circumstances beyond their control" mean the band can't play.

    Festival organisers say that The XCerts will take their place on the main stage on Sunday night.

  16. Help on offer for those addicted to drink or drugs in Sheffield

    People addicted to drink and drugs in Sheffield are being encouraged to find help to get clean during National Recovery Month in September.

    Adam Holmes (pictured), 44, from Crookes is one success story.

    He started drinking and taking drugs at 14. He had a difficult childhood and left home at 16.

    Adam got in with the wrong crowd as a teenager and started getting into trouble with the police.

    But he says things changed after a relationship break-up and he thought to himself: "What am I doing? I was ready to take my own life at that moment".

  18. Picture exclusive: Armed police make arrest on Leeds street

    Two men were arrested yesterday afternoon by armed officers in Leeds:

    The arrest happened at about 14:35 at the junction of Roundhay Road and Roseville Road when armed police stopped a car.

    The officers arrested two men on suspicion of a firearms offence.

    The arrests were related to an investigation into an incident in Roseville Road on 22 August where a man was threatened with a gun.

    The two men, aged 30 and 39, are still in custody and police say enquiries are ongoing.
