MP has reservations over HRI plans

Controversial plans to close A&E services at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI) have been axed by NHS bosses, but the move has been greeted cautiously by one of the area's MPs.

HRI
BBC

Labour's Thelma Walker says she has concerns "about each of the proposals which are being put forward."

The MP said in a statement: "Colne Valley residents deserve access to a comprehensive A&E service that includes emergency ambulance admissions."

In the revised plans, HRI would remain open to walk-in emergency patients, but those picked up in an ambulance would be taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.

The MP who represents Colne Valley added: "I am yet to see any detail of this plan and I have reservations about its achievability."

Police search for passengers after taxi driver stabbed

More details have been released about the stabbing of a taxi driver in Batley a week ago.

Police
BBC

It happened at about 01:40 last Friday on Bradford Road after the 36-year-old driver had picked up two customers from the Crown Cars depot.

As he was driving along Bradford Road towards Batley, his car was overtaken by a silver Ford Galaxy which pulled in front of him.

He got around it and pulled in at the BP garage a little further on, but then a second car, a silver Volkswagen Golf, along with the Ford tried to ram the taxi.

The driver and his passengers got out of the car and ran, but the suspects caught up with the driver and stabbed him in the leg, arm and head.

He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Police say they want to trace the passengers so they can talk to them about what happened and stress that they are not in any trouble.

Farmer 'could have died' in field arson attack

A farmer says he could have been killed after arsonists set fire to hundreds of acres of wheat ready for harvest on farmland near Wakefield.

Ackworth wheat field gone up in smoke
BBC

Fire crews battled smoke and fierce flames while Ackworth farmer Dan Scase drove through the fire watching his annual harvest being destroyed.

"We made a break diagonally across the field to stop it spreading, which didn't work," said Mr Scase.

"We were then trapped in the top corner of the field with a combine harvester and a tractor. We thought the only way out was to drive through the flames.

"I could have easily died, as could many people. There's been 10 months of work gone into this and there's no reward for it now," he adds.

Union calls for city leader to stand down

One of the UK's biggest unions is calling for the Leader of Wakefield Council to resign.

Peter Box
Wakefield Council

Unison says following a recent inspection by education watchdog Ofsted, which rated the council's children's services as "inadequate", that it's time for Peter Box (pictured) to step aside.

The union says the services "have been badly let down by incompetent managers and a bullying culture".

Responding, Mr Box says he's overseen urgent and decisive action to address the concerns raised by Ofsted.

The council's chief executive Merren McRae says there's no evidence to suggest that bullying issues are widespread.

Campaigners oppose new Huddersfield A&E plans

A group campaigning against plans to close A&E services at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI) says new proposals which would see it remain open aren't enough.

HRI sign
BBC

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust had drawn up plans to close the HRI, replace it with a smaller unit and move A&E care to Halifax.

But the former health secretary said in May that the plan was flawed and urged NHS bosses to think again.

New plans would see the HRI remain open, but ambulance patients would be transported to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.

Mike Forster, chair of campaign group Hands off HRI, says his members would oppose the new plans.

"This is not an Accident and Emergency as we all understand them to be," he says.

"They have already downgraded Dewsbury A&E and in effect this would become an accident centre and all emergencies would be transferred to Calderdale."

Yorkshire's Friday weather forecast

A bright but rather cool start, with plenty of early sunshine followed by an afternoon of heavy showers and sunny spells.

Any remaining thundery showers will quickly clear to the east, leaving a sunny evening.
