  4. £210m Leeds South Bank development gets green light

    The next stage of a major development in Leeds has been given the go-ahead.

    As part of the South Bank expansion plans, Leeds City Council has granted permission for a £210m development to be built.

    The development will include 928 apartments, cafes, restaurants and additional office and retail space.

    The apartments will be built on the former Evans Halshaw site on Hunslet Road.

  6. Huddersfield Town features twice on new Monopoly board

    Huddersfield gets its own Monopoly board later this month - and Huddersfield Town will feature twice on it.

    The new game will see famous locations from the London original such as Mayfair and Park Lane updated to represent Huddersfield landmarks.

    The club will feature on a pink spot and The John Smith's Stadium will get a dark blue spot.

    The town beat Halifax in a public vote be awarded an official edition of the board game.

  9. Bin workers in Kirklees to go on indefinite strike

    Bin workers in part of West Yorkshire have voted to go on strike indefinitely.

    The walkout, by members of Unison, is planned to take place at the start of October.

    Karl Battersby, Kirklees Council's Strategic Director for Economy and Infrastructure, said the authority was "extremely dissapointed" a the move.

    Members of Unison in Kirklees walked out for a week in July over claims of bullying and not being allowed to take holidays.

  11. Baby snake rescued from bin in Bradford

    A baby snake has been rescued by RSPCA officers after being found at the bottom of a wheelie bin in Bradford.

    The animal welfare charity was contacted on Tuesday afternoon after a member of the public found the snake underneath the rubbish in the bottom of a bin in Pembroke Street.

    A local inspector went to collect the snake and took it to a nearby reptile centre for specialist care.

    An RSPCA spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, given that the snake was found inside a wheelie bin with no obvious way of getting in or out of the bin, I suspect it has been dumped, which is very sad."

    And RSPCA exotics senior scientific officer Nicola White said: "We are seeing a worrying number of snakes coming into our centres because owners are no longer able to care for them."

  12. Man, 20, in critical condition in hospital after motorbike collision

    A 20-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after his motorbike collided with a car in Leeds yesterday evening.

    The rider came off his bike after colliding with a Land Rover which was turning from Calverley Bridge onto the A6120 at about 20:00 on Thursday.

    He suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

    Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed the crash.

  13. Prison staff in Yorkshire end protest action

    Prison staff in England and Wales, including in Yorkshire, have returned to work following this morning's protest action.

    The action stopped following "meaningful engagement" with Prisons Minister Rory Stewart, the Prison Officers' Association (POA) has said.

    They will now meet to agree "a plan of action to address the concerns of the union", according to the POA.

    The protest action followed a report which warned of a "dangerous lack of control" at Bedford jail.

  14. Listen: Leeds school begins first 'period poverty' study

    Leeds is claiming to be the first city in the country to tackle "period poverty" in its schools - the problem of girls missing lessons because they can't afford sanitary products.

    Leeds City Council is starting a pilot project at Carr Manor Community School to study the impact of period poverty and what to do about it.

    Freedom4Girls is a Leeds-based group which provides sanitary products to women in Kenya, but is now doing the same in West Yorkshire.

  15. Man dies after motorbike collision in Otley

    A 40-year-old man has died after his motorbike collided with a goods vehicle in Otley.

    York Gate

    The incident happened on York Gate at about 09:00 on Thursday morning when the biker, riding a black Suzuki, collided with the vehicle which was travelling in the opposite direction.

    The motorcyclist died at the scene, police say.

    Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police.
