A topping out ceremony has been held at St Luke's Hospital in Market Harborough.

It's a tradition when the last beam is placed atop of the structure being construction.

The site had been waiting to be redeveloped for nearly 30 years but work finally began in November.  

The new unit is costing £8m and is expected to open next February.

Chancellor invests in railway station

Market Harborough railway station is set for a major upgrade.

Chancellor George Osborne made the announcement in his Budget yesterday.

He said the Leicestershire station would be one of eight receiving a share of £16m to improve facilities. 

He also allocated £1m to expand car parking at the station.

More than 400 child sex offences reported last year

Arrests after teenager injured at swimming pool

Three women aged 49, 61 and 62 have been arrested on suspicion of neglect after an 18-year-old man was injured at a swimming pool in Leicester.

The 18-year-old is in a stable condition in hospital following the incident in Glenfield Road in January.

Claudio Ranieri said he was happy because Didier Deschamps already has very good midfielders but he's clearly interested in what Kante can do for them.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Claudio Ranieri said he was pleased that Danny Drinkwater had been called up to play for England.

Ranieri said: "I'm pleased and so are his team-mates. It means we're working well. (Drinkwater) deserves it."

Travel: Car and lorry crash near Coalville

BBC Travel

There's been a crash involving a car and a lorry on the A511 in Copt Oak. The road has been closed causing heavy traffic around Coalville.

The fire service say they've managed to free a person trapped in the car by cutting off the roof.

They have now been taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary in an ambulance.

One of the surprise announcement's in the budget yesterday was the introduction of a sugar tax on soft drinks. 

Long time campaigner against sugary drinks and Leicester East MP, Keith Vaz, says the tax sends a firm message to the manufacturers.

Mr Vaz says: "The biggest importance of this is to tell the manufacturers and the retailers, first of all, that they need to change their lifestyles.

"They need to promote their non-sugar drinks, which I'm sure some of the organisations will be very keen to do immediately."

Genge wants to stay at Tigers

Leicester Tigers on-loan prop-forward, Ellis Genge, has said he wants to secure a permanent deal at the club.

The 21 year old made his Premiership debut as a replacement last weekend against Wasps.

Local magician pays tribute to Paul Daniels

If you haven't yet heard, the Magician, Paul Daniels has died at the age of 77 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

The Leicestershire magician Magic Amit says he was inspired by Paul Daniels to take up magic.

"I remember watching his TV shows every single week when I was a kid and Paul Daniels was such a true showman and if it wasn't for his box of tricks, I don't think I'd have had a love for magic."

Company defends tweet likening Vardy to Holocaust victim

An online gambling firm, which compared Jamie Vardy to a Holocaust victim, says it was meant as a joke.

Fruity King posted a picture of the Leicester City striker on Twitter and described him as looking "like an extra from Schindler's List".

The National Holocaust Centre described the comparison as "disrespectful" and "inappropriate".

The firm has taken down the tweet and say they did not intend to cause offence.

Man in hospital with gun shot wounds

We've just heard that a man is in a stable condition hospital in Leicester after turning up with suspected gun shot wounds. 

Fire officers were called to the Leicester Royal Infirmary on Tuesday afternoon when the wounded man arrived.

Two men, aged 19 and 22, have been arrested and released on bail.

Drinkwater joins Vardy in England shirt

Danny Drinkwater has been included in Roy Hodgson's England squad alongside his Leicester City team mate Jamie Vardy for the friendlies with Germany and the Netherlands.

This will be Drinkwater's first time in an England shirt. Vardy has played in four international games already.

Family plea for safe return of pet dog

The family are distraught after their pet was stolen from inside their house in Wigston.

Police following up calls about missing Josh

Police are still looking for a missing 22-year-old man who lived on a narrowboat in Sawley Marina.

After making lots of appeals, police they say they've had several calls from members of the public and they are being followed up.
