Elderly woman suffers head injury after trying to stop burglar

An elderly woman needed hospital treatment after falling and banging her head trying to stop a burglar at her house in Mackworth.

Police said the raider - thought to be about 35 years old - took cash and a set of keys with a keyring that said "Nana's Keys" during the burglary in Greenland Avenue yesterday afternoon.

The force said the man went into the house while the woman was outside bringing in her bins and shoved her to the floor when she refused to hand over money.

Jogger suffers arm injury in hit-and-run

A jogger was hurt in a hit-and-run crash this morning, police say.

The man, 30, suffered an injury to his arm when a lorry hit him.

It happened at about 10:30 on Leicester Road between Shilton and Wolvey.

Arnold fire: Residents advised to stay away

Firefighters have urged residents to stay away as they tackle a large fire at a derelict school in Arnold.

About 30 firefighters are currently dealing with the blaze.

Station manager Tom Archer said: "We have got quite a large fire ongoing at present with quite a few road closures in place.

"We've got approximately 30 firefighters on the scene dealing with the incident and we will update you as soon as we know any more information."

Watch: Family of Mitchell Rodgers 'let down' by inquest verdict

The family of Mitchell Rodgers gave a short statement outside Derby Coroners' Court after an inquest jury delivered a conclusion of death by misadventure.

They said they felt "let down" by the verdict and added "justice has not been served to Mitchell" - but would not elaborate further.

An IPCC investigation into the 16-year-old's death in March 2015 cleared police of any wrongdoing.

Police have released a video showing three men they want to speak to after a 51-year-old man was stabbed in Leicester.

The man spent five days in hospital after being assaulted in Jarvis Street in the early hours of Wednesday 31 May.

Det Con Xanthe Fisher said the three men are thought to be aged between 17 and 25.

Mitchell Rodgers: Jury told misadventure was 'their only option'

Earlier, the Mitchell Rodgers inquest jury was told the 16-year-old, from Nether Heage, had been drinking on the night of his death in March 2015.

A police officer said he had been speaking to the boy after receiving reports of an altercation when he suddenly "turned round and made off".

As officers chased Mitchell, he entered Belper railway station and was running down tracks when he was hit by a train.

The post-mortem examination on his body found he sustained 22 significant injuries.

Prior to delivering their conclusion this afternoon, the inquest jury was told by the coroner that misadventure was the only option open to them.

Adoption campaign launched in Leicestershire

A campaign has been launched to find people to adopt children in Leicestershire.

Leicestershire County Council has 34 children - including babies, pre-school children, older children and children with disabilities - in its care who need adopting.

The council is hoping to find 70 people to meet the need.

Earlier we reported how Bill Oddie had told his Twitter followers he'd been invited to appear on this year's Celebrity Big Brother - but turned it down as it clashed with Birdfair 2017.

The Rutland event, which bills itself as "the birdwatching Glastonbury", starts on Friday and runs for three days.

Woman arrested after burglaries

A woman has been arrested after police responded to reports of burglaries at two premises in Bowbridge Road in Newark yesterday morning.

Nottinghamshire Police said padlocks were cut on two security gates in order to gain access to a compound containing a number of garage units.

A door to one of the units had been forced open and parts from a vehicle being stored inside had been removed.

The woman, 29, remains in police custody.

Derbyshire GP surgeries 'thought NHS cyber-attack was a hoax'

Some Derbyshire GP practices thought a cyber-attack in May was a hoax - and they didn't believe calls telling them to shut their computers down.

The clinical commissioning group for Southern Derbyshire's released a report into the attack, and how it could improve its response if it happened again.

Computers are to be upgraded so fewer of them are running older software which is vulnerable to hackers.
