  6. Arrest made in hit-and-run investigation

    Detectives investigating a hit-and-run in Eyres Monsell yesterday have arrested a man.

    The pedestrian, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition after the crash at the junction of Thurcroft Road and Hillsborough Road.

    A BMW X5 was later found abandoned in Glen Rise which is being examined by forensic experts.

    A 24-year-old man is being held on suspicion of attempted murder.

  8. Inquiry to be held into children's homes abuse claims

    It has been confirmed the public inquiry into historical child sex abuse is coming to Nottingham next year.

    The inquiry will look at whether there were any institutional failures to protect children in the care of Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils from abuse and exploitation.

    Beechwood

    The hearings will be held over three weeks in October.

    Billhar Uppal, a solicitor from Nottingham, will be leading the cases of historical child abuse and will be involved with the inquiry when it comes here.

    He said: "Beechwood is a generic umbrella name for the vast majority of children's homes in Nottingham city and county running at the time.

    "Every single one of those homes will be under scrutiny as will the whole system of child care in Nottingham city and county as well as nationally."

  9. Men in court over car park death

    Five men have gone on trial in connection with the imprisonment and death of a 40-year-old man found in a Leicester car park.

    Promise Ndlovu

    The body of Promise Ndlovu was found in Charter Street last October - it's claimed he and a group of men were involved in a scam that went wrong.

    Leicestershire Police referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission at the time as Mr Ndlovu had contacted them prior to his death.

    Two men are accused of manslaughter. They, and three others are also accused of false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.

    They deny the charges at Nottingham Crown Court.

  10. Taxi driver disarms armed passenger

    A taxi driver managed to disarm a passenger who threatened him with a knife in his cab.

    It happened on Saturday evening when the driver picked up two men on Wilmot Street.

    They demanded money from the driver but he managed to get the knife from them before they escaped.

  12. Documentary to explore link between football and dementia

    The daughter of a footballer whose dementia was caused by heading the ball says she hopes a BBC documentary will help highlight the issue.

    An inquest into the death of Jeff Astle, who started his career at Notts County, found that repeatedly heading heavy leather footballs had contributed to trauma to his brain.

    His daughter Dawn Astle said: "When he was going up to Glasgow to see Dr Willie Stewart, a consultant neuropathologist who re-examined my dad's brain...he found that he didn't have alzheimer's, he had what I suppose in layman's terms is boxer's brain."

    Footballer Alan Shearer investigates the link between football and dementia in a one-hour documentary.

    The documentary called Alan Shearer: Dementia, Football And Me will be aired on 12 November on BBC One.

  13. Christmas lights switch-on details announced

    Preparations are under way for Christmas and details for the light-switch in Nottingham have been revealed.

    The lights in the Market Square will be switched on at 19:30 and Nottingham Winter Wonderland will officially open on 17 November.

    The mayor of Nottingham, councillor Mike Edwards, will flick the switch to light up the 40-year-old fir tree.

    Details of the special guests who will join Mr Edwards for the switch-on and the entertainment will be announced later.

  16. Man remanded in custody after police car set on fire

    A 30-year-old man who was charged with arson has been remanded into custody.

    He appeared at Derby Magistrates' Court today after a marked police car was set on fire in Burton Road, Overseal.

    Officers were in the area because they received reports for the safety of a resident on Sunday, Derbyshire Police said.

    The man is due to appear at Derby Crown Court on 6 December.
