Rucksack clue in missing man mystery

Gavin Bevis

BBC News

Detectives searching for a Leicester man who's been missing for nearly two weeks say new CCTV footage has thrown up a "baffling" new line of enquiry.

Michal Zygan, 25, disappeared while walking from his home in Hopefield Road to nearby Percy Street early on 25 July.

CCTV footage taken later that morning showed him walking toward the canal towpath near Bede Park with a Nike rucksack on his back.

However, new CCTV footage has emerged showing him further along the towpath a few minutes later without the rucksack.

CCTV footage of Michal Zygan
Leicestershire Police

Insp Lynda Sherwin, said: "Despite extensive police enquiries, we can still find no logical reason why Michal was on that towpath instead of being at work doing a job he clearly loved.

“Now, in the space of perhaps three or four minutes, we have him pictured carrying his rucksack, and then without it.

"Somewhere between 08:30 and 08:34 along that towpath, Michal’s rucksack has vanished. Since 8.34am that morning, 12 days ago, Michal has also vanished."

Drug supplier known as 'Jonny Mamba' jailed

Sandish Shoker

BBC News

A man known as "Jonny Mamba", described by police as one of Nottinghamshire's biggest suppliers of Mamba, has been jailed for three years for producing and supplying large amounts of the psychoactive substance.

Jonny Henderson, 39, from East Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, was arrested in October 2016 after officers raided his house and found 44kg of unprepared vegetable matter along with the acetone and synthetic powders used to prepare Mamba - as well as 12kg of the already prepared substance.

They also found a substantial amount of cash.

Henderson, who carried business cards with the name Jonny Mamba on them, was found guilty after a five-day trial at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday.

After sentencing, the officer in the case, Dale Smith, said the force had been gathering evidence on Henderson for some time and were "pleased" he'd now been taken off the streets.

Naomi Mulryan and husband Adam were celebrating their honeymoon on one of the Gili Islands close to Lombok when the quake struck.

"They have had no help from anyone," said Mrs Froggett.

"The ATMs have ran out of money, they've not had any food or water since yesterday and they just want to come back."

She said she was now trying to contact their airline to get the couple's flight home changed.

The UK Foreign Office said it was working with Indonesian authorities to help British people affected, and that extra flights were being added for people who wished to leave Lombok.

Repairs to busy Kelham road bridge under way

Dean Jackson

BBC Radio Nottingham

Repairs to Kelham Bridge on the A617 near Newark have begun and are expected to continue for up to three weeks.

The busy road bridge over the River Trent was damaged in an accident last November. However, repair work has been postponed until now to take advantage of the lighter traffic volumes during the school summer holidays.

Rob Driver, from Via East Midlands - which manages the county's highways network for Nottinghamshire County Council - says the bridge will be closed to traffic from 09:00 until 16:30 each weekday while the damage is mended. Diversions are in place.

Plea to rescue scorched football pitches

Sandish Shoker

BBC News

This is what's happened to 12 pitches at Bottesford FC because of the summer's dry weather.

The Leicestershire club has today put out an appeal for volunteers to help fill in the cracks in order for their 28 teams to start training and playing for the next season.

Vice chairman Nick Dobney said: "We don't have a single pitch that is safe to play on and are scratching our heads on how to sort this out."

fields
Bottesford FC

Mr Dobney added that teams would normally be starting training in the coming weeks and organising friendly matches.

"It [the ground] did improve a bit after the rain we had a few weeks ago but now it's started to decline again and if we don't do this they don't have a chance of playing football in the next few weeks."

He said they had ordered three or four tonnes of topsoil to add into the cracks and had started to gather a team of volunteers to help them do it this week.

Sharp rise in children being home-schooled

Eddie Bisknell

Local Democracy Reporter

The number of children who are taught at home in Derbyshire has almost doubled in three years - but the actual figure is unknown, with many kids not registered at all.

Elective home schooling is on the rise, with the number of children being taught from home increasing from 495 in July 2015 to 808 as of July this year.

However, Derbyshire County Council says that this is "likely to be higher" because there is no legal requirement for parents or carers to notify the authority if they have chosen not to register their child or children with a school.

Leicestershire suburb continues to grow

Tim Parker

BBC Radio Leicester reporter

It’s said to be the biggest housing development in the region at the moment, and the work to extend Lubbesthorpe is already making a mark in the Leicestershire countryside.

Three developers are on site already working on plans to build 4,000 new homes in the area, three new schools and community buildings.

They're years from finishing but about 160 of these homes are already occupied.

Lubbesthorpe Bridal Road, where I interviewed campaigners against the development five years ago, is no longer a tiny country lane through unspoilt countryside.

Lubbesthorpe
BBC

One of the original campaigners, Paul Fox, says he's continuing to fight it's impact on neighbouring communities.

"It was farmland with five farms on here. It was a nice area to walk along, very peaceful," he said.

"I appreciate things have to change and houses have to be built somewhere but If local people don't raise concerns and object then nobody else will."
