  3. Sikh cancer survivor to appear in charity TV ad

    A man from Leicester, who survived prostate cancer, is starring in a new TV advert for Cancer Research UK.

    Surinderpal Singh Rai features alongside his wife and grandson to encourage people to support the work of the charity.

    The 68-year-old told the BBC that he wanted to take part in the campaign to raise awareness in the Sikh community in Leicester where cancer is referred to as "it".

    He said: "I wanted to get the news out in my own community because, as in certain communities, the word 'cancer' is a taboo subject."

  5. Derbyshire MP backs Hunt in PM contest

    Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, is one of 10 MPs who've formally entered the contest to replace Theresa May as Prime Minister.

    And he's got the backing of Derbyshire Dales MP Sir Patrick McLoughlin.

    He said: "I think he's got the right experience both as a long-serving cabinet minister but also as somebody who is an entrepreneur who built up a business.

    "That's going to be very important in the long-term - how we attract business into this country."

  7. Escaped exotic pet 'attacks goat'

    A search is under way for an exotic dog that's gone missing in Nottinghamshire.

    The Japanese raccoon dog - also known as a tanuki - escaped by digging its way out of an enclosure in Clarborough early this morning, its owner said.

    It was spotted and photographed at a local farm at about 06:00, where it reportedly attacked a goat.

    The dog's owner described the exotic pet as being "less dangerous than a fox" and said every effort was being made to find it, with further searches planned for this afternoon and evening.

    Nottinghamshire Police said they had received a report of the animal being spotted in Little Lane at 06:00 and were aware of the situation.

    Anyone who spots it is advised to call 101.

  8. Serious sex assault on woman in Leicester park

    A woman has reported being seriously sexually assaulted in Leicester.

    She was walking in the area of Watermead Park on Thursday when a man started talking to her.

    He then grabbed her and sexually assaulted her before leaving, police said.

    It happened on the east side of the River Soar between the A563 Watermead Way and Bath Street at about 18:30.

    Leicestershire Police have arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the attack.

    He remains in police custody.

    Det Insp Paul Kenyon said: "We know there were a number of people in the park at the time of the incident.

    "If you were walking, cycling, running through the park or having a BBQ in the park on Thursday evening please get in touch."

  11. Appeal to find football fan's missing ring

    A woman is hoping to reunite her dad with his gold engagement ring after he lost it at Wembley yesterday.

    The 78-year-old Derby County fan was watching the Rams play Aston Villa in the play-off final match when the piece of jewellery went missing.

    The family were sitting in Block 115 just outside Entrance C.

  12. Police officer injured in arrest

    A man has been charged with assaulting a police officer in Nottingham.

    The officer stopped two men on Maid Marian Way on Friday morning. One ran off but was arrested after being chased.

    A lock knife and cannabis were recovered but the officer was hurt during the struggle.

    The 18-year-old suspect was also charged with possession of a bladed article and cannabis.
