Bury 'arson' attacks linked, police say

A number of suspected arson attacks in Bury dating back to March are being treated as linked, police said.

The most recent fire where tyres were set on fire outside a property in Kay Street, took place on 27 April.

Earlier incidents happened on the same street on 28 and 29 March, and in John Street on 27 March.

Police are appealing for information.

'Caring son' died in Moss Side stabbing

A man who died when he was stabbed after being hit by a car has been described as a "caring son".

Abdul Hafidah, 18, died in hospital from a stab wound to the neck after being injured in Moss Lane East in the Moss Side area on 12 May.

Paying tribute, his family said: "Abdul was a composed and caring son, who bought us all so much joy. You felt his presence when he was there and you missed it whenever he wasn't."

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of murder. A third was arrested for attempted murder and has been released on bail.

Travel: M60 lane blocked

One lane is blocked and there is slow traffic on the M60 clockwise between junction 6, Sale, and junction 7, Stretford, because of a crash involving two cars.

Headstones at a Jewish cemetery have been destroyed in a "deliberate and targeted attack", police have said.

Officers discovered 14 headstones had been knocked over and broken at Blackley Jewish Cemetery in Rochdale Road, Manchester, at about 15:45 BST on Wednesday.

Police are treating it as a hate crime "because of the clear racial motivation".

Ch Supt Wasim Chaudhry said: "This is a sickening act of criminal damage which we are taking very seriously."

Andy Burnham says his heart is equally shared between Manchester and Liverpool on the day he launched his campaign for Greater Manchester mayor at The Lowry.

He wants to rebalance England and make Greater Manchester "unashamedly entrepreneurial".

His top transport priority would be the East to West HS3 rail link.

The MP for Leigh was applauded as he said the main reason he wants the job is to integrate health and social care in the public sector.

Shadow home secretary Andy Burnham told Labour activists "Westminster has failed the North" as he launched his campaign to become the party's candidate for mayor of Greater Manchester.

The Leigh MP vowed to devote himself to the task of "rebalancing our country".

Mr Burnham said the mayoral job was "cabinet-level" and required cabinet-level experience.

In a speech in Salford he said Labour needed to "field its biggest hitters".

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that gutted a classroom at a college in Salford.

About 20 firefighters tackled the fire at Pendleton College in Dronfield Road earlier, which saw two exams disrupted.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "The cause of the fire is unknown."

A father stopped a carjacker who attempted to drive off in his vehicle with his three-year-old son inside.

The man forced the child's mother and five-year-old brother out of the vehicle in the Aldi car park in Garrett Way on Monday evening, police said.

The boy's father managed to jump into the car and tackle the thief who ran off towards Gorton monastery.

Police and CPS to review firefighter death case

The police and the Crown Prosecution Service are to review evidence after an inquest jury concluded a firefighter was unlawfully killed in a blaze in Manchester city centre.

Stephen Hunt, 38, from Bury, died in the fire at Paul's Hair World in Oldham Street in July 2013. 

Jurors concluded it was probable two 15-year-old girls deliberately started the fire after smoking cigarettes at the rear of the building.

The girls - who are now aged 17 - both told the jury they had put out their cigarettes. The case is to be reviewed to determine if any further action should be taken, police said.

High abortion rates in Rochdale and Salford

Rochdale and Salford are in the top 10 areas of England that have the highest abortion rates outside of London, data from the Office of National Statistics has revealed.

Both boroughs have rates of 20 abortions for every 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 in 2015.
