Peace campaigner statue made from guns

More than 50 guns handed in during a police amnesty have been melted down to make a sculpture of a Manchester peace activist.

The bust has been created to honour Dr Erinma Bell, who has campaigned to rid the streets of Moss Side of guns.

It was produced by Guns to Goods, an arts-based initiative converting firearms into works of art.

Stockport Council's adult education requires improvement, Ofsted says

Stockport Council's adult education provision has been rated as requiring improvement in its latest inspection report by Ofsted.

Ofsted said leadership and teaching needed to improve with closer monitoring of outside providers.

The council said it has set up a board to produce a 24-month plan for the service.    

The service was rated good at its previous inspection in 2011.

Some UK High Streets and public spaces no longer have any council-run public toilets, the BBC has learned.

Station tribute to Victoria Wood

Manchester's Victoria Station is to be temporarily be transformed into Victoria Wood Station on Saturday as part of an event celebrating the comedian's life.

It will feature musical tributes to the Prestwich-born entertainer who died last month alongside contributions from friends and former colleagues. 

The event being hosted by actress Sue Devaney, who starred alongside the comic in the sitcom Dinner Ladies.

All proceeds will go to charity.

Sightings reported of missing boys

There have been several reports of sightings of two boys aged 11 and nine who have been missing since yesterday, police said.

A friend overheard eleven-year-old Reo Ulett (left), and Lovelle Taylor-Hibbert, nine, saying they "wanted to go camping" at a house in Whitby Road, Fallowfield.

Police received reports they were on Ashton Old Road earlier.

Wrong-way driver crashes on clockwise M60 near Trafford

An elderly motorist drove more than five miles the wrong way around the M60 before crashing.

The man drove anti-clockwise in the right hand lane between Cheadle and Trafford Park before crashing at about 18:15 on Monday.

His red Ford Fiesta collided with two vehicles, police said on Tuesday. The man, who is in his 80s, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Boys, aged 11 and nine, missing from Manchester area

Two boys aged 11 and nine have been missing since yesterday after a friend overheard them saying they "wanted to go camping".

Eleven-year-old Reo Ulett (left), and Lovelle Taylor-Hibbert, nine, were seen at a house in Whitby Road, Fallowfield, at about 17:00 when they said they wanted to go camping even though they had no kit, food and money, police said.

Lovelle was last sighted at about 20:00 in Dorset Road in Levenshulme.

Insp Paul Coburn said: "Neither of these boys has ever been missing before and as people can imagine, their families are absolutely frantic with worry."

Thousands of people have taken part in Manchester's annual Whit walk.

A procession with banners and brass bands walked from the city's cathedral to Albert Square for a special service.

Brawl stabbing victim has surgery

A 29-year-old man has had surgery after he was stabbed in the stomach in a mass brawl in Manchester city centre.

The man is described as stable following the fight between two groups of men outside The Press Club, off Deansgate, at about 04:35 on Monday.

Another man, aged 26, who was also stabbed in the stomach, is described as stable.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Bus-only road opening in Warrington

Warrington's first purpose built bus-only road aimed at easing congestion on a busy commuter route through the town opens later.

The new link connects Birchwood Way from the Faraday Street roundabout to Ordnance Avenue, allowing shorter and faster bus journeys between north and south Birchwood.

Access is restricted to buses and emergency services vehicles only.

Automatic number plate recognition cameras will capture the registration plates of all vehicles passing through - owners of banned vehicles could face a £60 fine.
