  9. Cannabis farm found after flat fire

    A cannabis farm was discovered after a fire in Wavertree, Merseyside Police say.

    Two hundred and fifty plants and cannabis growing equipment were found following a fire at a rented flat in Picton Road around 10:50 on Monday.

    Officers also found electricity had been illegally diverted.

  10. Robbers sprayed with fire extinguisher

    Two robbers who tried to smash a display cabinet at a pawnbrokers fled after staff sprayed them with a fire extinguisher.

    Merseyside Police said the raiders attempted to smash the cabinet with a hammer at Albemarle & Bond on Prescot Road in Old Swan around 15:45 on Monday.

    Police believe the same offenders stole jewellery just over an hour later at H&T Pawnbrokers on West Derby Road in Tuebrook.

  11. Cyclist dies in lorry crash

    A cyclist has died in a crash with a lorry in South Liverpool, police said.

    Merseyside Police said the accident happened in Hillfoot Avenue, Hunts Cross at about 13:50.

    The man has yet to be formally identified.

    Pete Waterman has been talking about his time presenting The Hitman and Her from the show's "spiritual home" - Mr Smiths in Warrington, which was destroyed in a suspected arson attack today.

    "It's bizarre, looking back, that with the music blaring on, you could do a live TV show - pioneering stuff really," he said.

    "It was about music with a few games in it. This was night-time television and we were playing records - that's the point. It just wasn't meant to be anything other than entertaining.

    "At that point, if you went into Mr Smiths, you would have seen exactly that. All we did was put a camera in a nightclub. We just showed what was going on in nightclubs and Mr Smiths was typical of 80s disco."

    Eight people have been arrested over a blaze which ripped through a former nightclub in Warrington and tore the roof off the building.

    At its height, 50 firefighters tackled the fire at Mr Smiths on Wilson Patten Street at 02:00 BST.

    The fire service said unstable areas at the site are now due to be demolished.

    A man, 43, was arrested on suspicion of arson along with four 17-year-old boys. A 16-year-old boy, 16-year-old-girl and a 15-year-old girl were also held. All are from the Warrington area.

  17. Lorry that killed Runcorn motorcyclist was speeding

    An HGV involved in a fatal collision in Runcorn that left a Vicars Cross motorcyclist dead was travelling faster than the speed limit, an inquest heard.

    Martyn Platts, 55, was riding home from work at 16:10 on 29 April 2014, when the crash happened on the bend linking the A533 Queensway to the A557 Weston Point Expressway.

    Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling's apparent inhaling of laughing gas will be "a minor blip" in a "fantastic career", says a players' union chief.

    Sterling will be spoken to about his lifestyle by manager Brendan Rodgers.

    The A5061 Wilson Patten Street in Warrington is closed and there is slow traffic in both directions between bank Quay Traffic Lights and the A49 Mersey Street junction because of the fire at the old Mr Smiths Nightclub.

    Former West Indies cricket captain Sir Viv Richards has spoken about how Liverpool's Raheem Sterling needs to consider his friendships, after pictures appearing to show the footballer taking nitrous oxide were published in The Sun.

    British Transport Police say their Grand National operation was "a success", with only one caution and one penalty notice issued across the three-day festival.

    About 38,500 racegoers journeyed to Aintree by rail, most of whom showed "patience and good nature", a force spokeswoman said.

    The force only had to take formal action on Saturday, when one caution was handed out for an incident of common assault at Liverpool Central Station and a penalty notice was given for drunk and disorderly behaviour at Aintree Station.

    The chief executive of Warrington Council says plans for a youth club at the old Mr Smiths building have been "set back years" after a suspected arson attack.

    Fire crews were called at 02:00 to the former nightclub and they are spending the rest of the day damping down after the roof collapsed.

    It is likely the unit will have to be knocked down now. A 15-year-old girl, a 17-year-old boy and a 43-year-old man have all been arrested.

    Manchester City's Liverpudlian striker Toni Duggan has apologised for an "error of judgement" after posing for a photograph with Louis van Gaal.

    Duggan deleted the photo with Manchester United's manager from her Instagram page after receiving criticism from City fans.

    "I appreciate the significance of my actions and assure everyone connected with City that I am proud to represent the club," she said in a Facebook post.

  34. Sterling 'made mistake' over nitrous oxide

    Raheem Sterling "made a mistake" in apparently being filmed inhaling the legal high nitrous oxide but the 20-year-old Liverpool star should be treated with understanding, according to players' union chief Bobby Barnes.

    Footage has emerged of Sterling appearing to take the substance and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has said he will be speaking to his player about his lifestyle.

    The deputy chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association said: "Nobody would condone the use of these substances as footballers are seen as role models. But you have to bear in mind that we ask an awful lot of young players growing up in the public eye.

    "Many of us look back at things we have done in our teens and early 20s and wish we hadn't done them. He's made a mistake and people are human. I am sure this will be a minor blip."

    Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire broke out at Mr Smiths on Wilson Patten Street at 02:00 BST.

    The building suffered "severe damage" and nearby buildings were evacuated.

    No-one is thought to have been injured in the blaze, which took 50 firefighters to bring under control.

    It toured several nightclubs, but it's spiritual home was Mr Smiths, where the first show was broadcast from.

  49. 'Distinctive wine' stolen in Wirral

    Merseyside Police is appealing for information after a quantity of "distinctive wine" was among items stolen during a burglary at a restaurant in Greasby in the early hours of 1 April.

    Officers were called to Ellies Restaurant and Wine Bar following reports that someone had broken in between 00:30 and 09:00 and taken a large quantity of wines, spirits, food and a satellite television box.

    The bottles of wine which were stolen are only sold in restaurants, not over the counter, and as a result are "very distinctive", police say.

    They include Angels Flight White Zinfandel, Drakensberg Chenin Blanc, Las Manitos Viognier and Monastier Shiraz.

    An ex-Premier League footballer searched for players to help "fix" lower league matches, a court heard.

    Delroy Facey, 34, is accused of acting for two men who have already been convicted of match-fixing.

    The prosecution claims the former Bolton Wanderers and Tranmere Rovers striker had acted as a "middleman" for them in November 2013.

    Mr Facey is on trial at Birmingham Crown Court alongside former non-league player Moses Swaibu. Both deny conspiracy to commit bribery.

    Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service say the "raging" blaze caused the roof to collapse into the building, making it dangerous for crews. Residents living near the nightclub have been told to close doors and windows.

    The service is working with Cheshire Police to discover the cause.

    Over 70 firefighters are tackling a major blaze at the former Mr. Smiths nightclub in Warrington.

    Crews have been at the scene since just before 02:00 and are expected to be there for most of the morning. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area if possible during the morning rush hour because of potential delays.

    And Liverpool have confirmed they will speak to Raheem Sterling after he was apparently filmed inhaling a legal high.

    Footage appears in the papers today suggesting the Reds star used nitrous oxide and then passed out. It comes two days after pictures were published of the 20 year-old allegedly smoking a shisha pipe.
