Lime Street to remain closed due to Futurist Cinema collapse risk, council says

Part of Lime Street in Liverpool will remain closed until midnight on Tuesday due to the condition of the derelict former Futurist Cinema, the city council has said.

Structural experts said the building is still at risk of collapse and in order to prevent any danger to the public, the road will remain closed from Skelhorne Street to Copperas Hill.

There is pedestrian access on the street opposite the Futurist.

Football: Barrow AFC striker Andy Cook signs for Tranmere Rovers

Tranmere have signed striker Andy Cook in a two-year free-transfer deal from National League rivals Barrow.

Cook scored 38 goals in 48 league games for Barrow after joining in July 2014 following his release by Grimsby.

Coroner appeals to trace the family of woman from Birkdale

The family of a 69-year-old woman from Birkdale who died are being urged to contract the coroner.

Carol Ann Harris, of Hazelwood, Liverpool Road, died yesterday. There are no suspicious circumstances.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Stephen Craig at Sefton Coroner’s Court.

Warrington homes plan earmarked for approval

Plans for 1,100 new houses next to the M62 near Warrington have been earmarked for approval ahead of a meeting tonight.

Cheshire Science Corridor enterprise zone launched

An enterprise zone designed to attract jobs and businesses to sites across Cheshire has been launched.

Warrington's Birchwood Park is part of the 'Cheshire Science Corridor' enterprise zone

Four areas of the Cheshire Science Corridor will offer relief from business rates and other taxes, as well as access to 'super-fast' broadband.

The zone includes sites where hundreds of jobs have been lost in recent years.

Officials claim 20,000 jobs and 500 new businesses could be attracted to the county due to the incentives offered by the enterprise zone designation. Sites in Ellesmere Port, Warrington and east Cheshire will benefit from the new status.

Five arrested over far right Liverpool demo are bailed

Five people arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder over a far right demonstration in Liverpool have been released on bail.

People became trapped inside St George's Hall as violence broke out between National Action and their opponents in February.

Homes in Dovecot, Cheshire, Blackburn, Accrington and Midlothian in Scotland were searched as part of the investigation.

Unexplained death of Liverpool man, 42, investigated

The body of a 42-year-old man has been found at a house in Liverpool.


Police were called to a property in Hillview, Aigburth, just before 19:30 last night by concerned neighbours.

The death is being treated as unexplained. Inquiries are under way to identify the man and establish when he died.

A pilot programme for people at high risk of developing lung cancer found regular screening can increase the chance of survival for five years or more to 73%, the University of Liverpool has found.

Mental health support launched for Merseyside emergency services staff

A new mental health project is being launched in Wirral to help support emergency services staff in the region.

The Merseyside Blue Light Health and Wellbeing Project will help raise awareness, as well as tackling stigma and providing support to those who need it.

Earlier this year, a study carried out by the mental health charity Mind found that one-in-four emergency services workers had considered killing themselves.
