Weather: Cloudy evening but more sunshine in store

Cloud will slowly increase from the east this evening, but it will stay dry, with western parts hanging on to the warm sunshine the longest.


It may be a cloudy night, but most parts should see sunshine developing into Saturday. A few showers could break out in the afternoon.

Police officer handed suspended sentence over crash

A Merseyside Police officer who admitted dangerous driving for his part in a three vehicle crash has been given an 11 month suspended jail sentence.

PC Paul Ford was also ordered to carry out 200 hours in unpaid work, banned from driving for four years and handed a 19:00 to 05:00 curfew for eight months,

The 49-year-old was off duty when he was involved in a crash on Switch Island, at the end of the M57, on 28 February 2014. Three people were seriously injured, including two left with life-changing injuries.

He has also been suspended by the force pending further inquiries.

A "national architecture centre in the North" is to be opened by The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Liverpool's Riba North will have conference facilities and a gallery "at its heart", a spokeswoman said.

A lawyer representing some of the Hillsborough families says they hope to draft a commons bill calling for a so-called Hillsborough Law within the next fortnight.

Michael Bay's Transformers role for 'Loneliest Dog' Freya

A dog which spent six years in the Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre in Merseyside is set to star in a Hollywood blockbuster.

Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre

Rescue dog Freya, a Staffordshire bull terrier, was chosen by director Michael Bay to star in the next movie in the Transformers science fiction franchise after he read about her story.

He tweeted: "Found this in the news last week in the UK. We gave the Loneliest Dog, a role in Transformers."

Scrambler bike death teen named as Ben Phillips

A teenager who died in a crash in Belle Vale has been named as 17-year-old Ben Phillips, who was from the area.

Mr Phillips was riding a scrambler bike which was in collision with a motorbike at about 19:10 on Thursday.

Merseyside Police said earlier he wasn't wearing a helmet or other protective clothing.

The 17-year-old was injured in the crash at the junction of Belle Vale Road and Lee Vale Road, and later died in hospital.

No arrests have been made.

Bus and car collide on Edge Lane

BBC Travel

Traffic was slowed down on Edge Lane earlier after a bus and a car collided at about 12:30. 

A woman was attended to by members of the public but police said no one was seriously injured. 

All lanes have no fully reopened.

The outgoing chief constable of Merseyside Police has been appointed a professor at Liverpool John Moores University.

Sir Jon Murphy will begin a new role at the Centre for Advanced Policing Studies, after he retires from the force later this month. 

The centre provides professional training courses for those interested in a career in the police, and it also houses the latest technology in forensic science.

Plans for new Liverpool street drinkers centre unveiled

Plans have been unveiled for a new centre for street drinkers in Liverpool. It's hoped the facility, which will operate throughout the summer, will help to reduce anti-social behaviour.

The REST centre is set to open on the site of a former cinema on Fraser Street - and it'll provide rehabilitation, education, support and treatment to the city's street drinkers. 

People will be allowed to consume alcohol on the premises - but organisers say they'll be supervised at all times, and offered help to change their lifestyles.

Liverpool woman banned from keeping dogs after two die from starvation

A Liverpool woman has been banned from keeping dogs for five years after two pets in her care died from starvation.

Liverpool Magistrate's Court heard how RSPCA inspectors found one of the pets was so weak it couldn't lift its head or walk.

Jordan Barlow, 22, was also given a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for a year.

Paul McCartney's tribute to 'wonderful' Carla Lane

Beatles legend Paul McCartney has paid tribute to Liverpool TV scriptwriter Carla Lane, who died aged 87 on Tuesday.

Writing in a statement published on his website, he referred to her as a "wonderful woman" and a "passionate animal lover".

He added: "The world has lost a great advocate for the rights of animals but more importantly someone who saw the value of her fellow creatures’ lives and did everything in her power to show them the love and respect they deserved."

BBC Music Day: Button Street Badger Band perform on Mersey

There is plenty of live music in Liverpool today as BBC Music Day gets under way in the city.

The Button Street Badger Band kicked off events with a live performance on the Dazzle Ship Ferry this morning on the River Mersey.

'Britain's loneliest dog' Freya has landed a role in the new Transformers movie

A dog which languished at a Merseyside animal shelter for six years could soon become a Hollywood A-lister after being spotted by the director of one of cinema’s most lucrative franchises.  

Freya, a rescue dog from Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre, was dubbed “Britain’s loneliest dog” after spending almost all her life living in kennels.

Scrambler bike rider dies in south Liverpool crash

A scrambler bike rider has died after being seriously injured in a crash in Belle Vale, Liverpool.

Merseyside Police were called to reports of a crash between a Hyundai car and a scrambler bike at the junction of Belle Vale Road and Lee Vale Road at 19:10 on Thursday.

In February, several children were knocked down outside their school in Liverpool. 

Earlier this week the 80-year-old woman responsible was banned from driving for life but was spared a jail term.
