Tennis: Wimbledon joy for Skupski brothers

Liverpool tennis brothers Neal and Ken Skupski have confirmed they will take part in this year's doubles tournament at Wimbledon.

Unemployment falls in North West to 175,000

The number of people out of work in the North West has fallen slightly to 175,000.

The region's unemployment rate now stands at 4.9%. The rate for the whole of the country is 5% - the lowest it has been since 2005.

Travel: Overnight road closures in Widnes this weekend

A number of road closures are planned for Widnes this weekend as work continues on the new Mersey Gateway project.

The disruption will begin at 19:30 on Friday on Queensway northbound, between the exit slip to Watkinson Way and Desoto Road.

The finished project will see a new six-lane toll bridge over the River Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes.

Liverpool man describes helping injured England fan after Euro 2016 attack

An England fan has described how he helped an unconscious fellow supporter who had been attacked by Russian hooligans with an iron bar and bottles.

Joe Tyrell, from Liverpool, was in Marseille on Saturday when violence flared ahead of England's opening game of Euro 2016.

He said he helped an unnamed man, who had lost consciousness for between seven and 10 minutes, by ensuring he was taken to safety.

About 300 people use the facilities at the Joseph Lappin Centre in Old Swan, which offers exercise classes and personal training in sign language. It is funded by charity Deaf Active and is open to the whole community.

Fire crews cut women free from Wirral crash

Two women have been freed by firefighters after being trapped in a two-vehicle collision in Wirral.

Firefighters were called to Croft Retail Park in Bromborough at 20:15 last night, and used cutting equipment to rescue the women from one of the vehicles.

The driver was taken to Aintree hospital for further checks. Her passenger was unharmed.

A football fan from Liverpool who witnessed the violence in Marseille during Euro 2016 has described Russian hooligans as an organised group who set out to kill.

Joe Tyrell, from Woolton, said he feared one man was dead seeing him being attacked in the street. 

Extra British police are being sent to France to help with the authorities as England prepare to meet Wales tomorrow. Mr Tyrell did have a ticket for that game, but decided to come home early.

Firefighters respond to 31 flash flood alerts across Cheshire

A clean-up operation is under way after flash flooding hit parts of Cheshire, with firefighters called to deal with 31 different incidents.

Several shops at Cheshire Oaks retail park had to close during the deluge.

Ellesmere Port was also particularly affected, including Coliseum Way and Stanney Lane, which suffered 18 inches of flood water.

Cheshire Fire have issued safety advice on how to deal with flooding.

Crimewatch appeal over Warrington aggravated burglary

A former Warrington landlady was held at gunpoint whilst her granddaughter slept in the next room.

The case featured on a Crimewatch Roadshow programme on BBC One.

Hundreds of new bins for Liverpool parks

Up to 500 new and replacement litter bins are to be placed in in Liverpool’s parks and surrounding streets.

The £250,000 scheme will see ugly or faulty bins replaced and new bins put at the entrance to parks.

A £20,000 fund will also be available for community groups to apply for, to support activities to reduce litter.

Crimewatch TV appeal over raid at former Liverpool FC owner's home

A robbery at the home of former Liverpool FC owner David Moores has featured in a BBC TV appeal.

Mr Moores was attacked by masked men with crowbars during the raid in March, and the gang managed to escape with possessions worth £1.7m. 

The case featured on the Crimewatch Roadshow programme on BBC One this morning.

Eight adapted trikes stolen from Liverpool special school

The deputy head of a special school in Liverpool has condemned thieves who stole specially adapted tricycles over the weekend. 

Eight trikes were taken from a locked shed at Princes Primary, which is off Upper Parliament Street, late on Sunday afternoon.

Beatles legend McCartney pays tribute to Orlando victims

Sir Paul McCartney is the latest musician to pay tribute to the victims of the Orlando shooting, which left 49 people dead and dozens wounded.

At his show in Berlin last night, he appeared on stage for his encore with a rainbow flag, before telling the crowd in German: "We stand together with Orlando".

The Premier League fixtures have just been released for the new season - on the opening day, Everton host Tottenham - Liverpool are away to Arsenal.

On a massive weekend for Merseyside on the 15 October, Liverpool welcome Man United to Anfield while Everton go to Man City. 

The first Merseyside derby is at Goodison on 17 December and the return fixture at Anfield is the 1 April.

Campaign to protect vulnerable adults launched in Warrington

Warrington Council is launching a campaign, aimed at protecting vulnerable adults, as part of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. 

Officials are urging people to think about those who may be at risk of physical or emotional abuse, as well as financial fraud.

Part of Cheshire Oaks shopping outlet had to be evacuated last night as heavy rain caused flash flooding. 

More than a dozen stores were affected so will stay closed for the next couple of days and the clean up will continue this morning.
