A man who raped a woman in a hostel in Liverpool has been jailed for life.

Daniel Hamer, 25, admitted raping a 51-year-old woman during his trial at Liverpool Crown Court.

He was ordered to serve a minimum of five years and ten months.

Eight men have been arrested in an investigation into a series of high-value cash machine thefts in the UK.

The men, aged between 27 and 41, are held on suspicion of carrying out raids from Wiltshire in the south to Aberdeenshire in the north.

Explosives were used to sabotage some ATMS, while others were dragged away using stolen vehicles.

Six of the men are from Merseyside, one from Birmingham and one from Leigh, Greater Manchester.

Plans approved for new specialist cancer hospital in Liverpool

Plans to build a major new hospital specialising in cancer treatments in Liverpool have been approved.

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust – which provides the region’s specialist cancer services – has been granted planning permission for the 11-floor hospital in West Derby Street as part of its £157m investment to improve cancer care.

The new hospital will be built next to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and University of Liverpool after it was approved by the city council.

Eight arrests over ATM thefts across UK

Eight men have now been arrested in an investigation into a series of high-value cash machine thefts in England and Scotland.

Three men were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to commit attacks on ATMs following search warrants in St Helens, Huyton, Prescot and Wavertree. 

Explosives were used to sabotage some ATMS, while others were dragged away using stolen vehicles in raids between Wiltshire in the south and as far north as Aberdeenshire in Scotland from February 2015 to January 2016.

Earlier five men, including three from Merseyside, were also held over the thefts.

Five men including three from Merseyside have been arrested in dawn raids as part of an investigation into a series of thefts from cash machines in England and Scotland.

The men, aged between 27 and 41, are being questioned by police investigating a series of raids as far south as Swindon in Wiltshire and as far north as Kingswell near Aberdeen dating back to late 2014.High-powered tools were used to cut through the shutters of stores containing stand alone ATMs, before they were dragged away and broken into to steal the cash.

Historic England to visit Daresbury Hall 'arson attack' manor house

Historic England is due to visit a disused manor that was "severely damaged" in a suspected arson attack.

Fire broke out at Grade II-listed Daresbury Hall, at Daresbury, near Warrington on Saturday.

The building has been on its Heritage at Risk register for a number of years.

Cheshire Police said the fire, which destroyed the roof of the three-storey building, is believed to have been started deliberately.

Bishop of Liverpool to lead commemoration for soldiers who died at the Somme

The Bishop of Liverpool will lead a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in Walton later.

There will be a service at St Mary's Church followed by a special assembly at Alsop High School to remember a group of young men from Walton who were killed during the first day of the battle, one of the bloodiest of World War One.

The British army suffered 60,000 casualties in the first day of the assault on the German lines on 1 July 1916.

South Liverpool residents left without water after 'electricity surge'

A number of properties in south Liverpool were without water this morning after an electricity surge damaged some pumps in the area.

A spokesman for United Utilities said the water pumps have now been fixed.

The water supply problem forced Calderstones School in Allerton to close.
