The best man stole the show at the wedding of former Everton, Blackpool and Fleetwood footballer Jamie Milligan.

Milligan married his partner Mandy at the Villa Hotel in Wrea Green, Lancashire, on 13 August.

His best man, Danny McKenzie, claimed he had forgotten his speech and set off on an epic quest to retrieve it.

'Under pressure' hospital trust asks for help to free up beds

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Trust is asking patients' relatives to "prioritise" taking family members out of hospital if they are ready to be discharged.

The trust said it is under "significant and sustained pressures" following a difficult summer and is asking people to only use A&E if they "really need it" and to "support" the discharge of patients.

"If your loved one is ready to be discharged, as they no longer require the specialist care our teams provide, we ask that you prioritise supporting their discharge", a trust statement said.

Littlewoods boss says mobile 'is where the action is'

Freed from "the shackles of the catalogue", Littlewoods has benefited from the move to online shopping and in particular on mobile phones.

The company's owner, Shop Direct, which also owns fashion website Very.co.uk, has reported record profits.

It estimates that its customers - usually female - spend about four hours a day on their phones.

Peter Shilton says England skipper should have quit after Euro 2016

Wayne Rooney should have retired from international football after Euro 2016, says ex-England captain Peter Shilton.

Rooney, 30, made his 116th appearance for England in Sunday's World Cup qualifying victory over Slovakia.

"I don't think he's a striker anymore," said Shilton, who won 125 caps. "We are trying to fit him in, but he's not a midfield player for me. Never will be."

Plans for Chester's new cinema announced

Chester's new cinema, due to open in 2019, will be operated by Picturehouse Cinemas, it has been announced.

It will be a part of the Northgate redevelopment, which will include new shops, restaurants, a hotel and market hall. 

The city centre has been without a cinema for the last nine years, after the Odeon closed in 2007.

The council's licensing committee has signed a safety certificate, ahead of the first home game of the season against Leicester. 

A final inspection will be carried out tomorrow. 

The new stand will increase the capacity at Anfield to 54,000.

Teenager critical after suspected airgun shooting

A 19-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was shot in the head with what is believed to be an airgun 

Emergency services were called to London Fields in Billinge, near St Helens on Sunday evening.  

Police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

History of Liverpool's Bluecoat revealed for 300th anniversary

New research has shed light on the architects of one of Liverpool's oldest city centre buildings.

Staff at the Bluecoat believe they have identified the builders as master mason Edward Litherland and engineer Thomas Steers.

The same duo are responsible for Liverpool's famous Old Dock and a number of other buildings around Liverpool.

The research is part of a series of events and celebrations to mark the building's 300th anniversary next year.

A care home in Sefton that has been rated inadequate by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has apologised to families, adding it has introduced measures to "improve standards".

Melling Acres, which is run by Parkcare Homes (No.2) Limited, provides specialist support and accommodation for up to 16 adults with complex needs associated with a learning disability or autism. 

The CQC found people living at the home were not protected from abuse and found many mistakes dealing with medicine had not been reported.

A spokeswoman for Melling Acres home said: “We take this report extremely seriously.

"We have already introduced a series of measures to improve standards of care and safety, including increasing staffing levels, bringing in a new manager and a Registered Nurse to manage medicines, and ensuring all staff receive additional specialist training."

Pre-tax profits at the Liverpool-based retailer Shop Direct have soared by 44%.

It is the first full year that the company - which owns the Very and Littlewoods brands - has operated exclusively online and said more people are shopping via their mobile phones.

Chief Executive Alex Baldock said it shows the "vast majority of customers aren't missing the traditional catalogues".

Relatives are being asked to arrive swiftly to pick up anyone who has been discharged so it can clear wards quickly.

It urged people to use walk-in centres for non-urgent cases.

In a statement, the trust said "patient safety remains their first priority".

Hillsborough investigation boss Jon Stoddart resigns

The head of the police investigation into the Hillsborough disaster has resigned due to health issues, the Home Office has said.

Jon Stoddart was appointed in 2012 to lead Operation Resolve, which is examining the deaths of 96 people at an FA Cup game in Sheffield in 1989.

It is due to end later this year after an inquest jury concluded in April that the fans were unlawfully killed.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said the investigation "remains on schedule".

A care home in Sefton has been rated inadequate across all areas and placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

People living at the home said they didn't feel safe and the watchdog found they were not protected from abuse - there had been serious assaults by other residents and incidents had been "downplayed".

The CQC also found many mistakes dealing with medicine had not been reported and some new staff, who had no previous experience of care work, had begun supporting vulnerable people without receiving any training.

The care home has been contacted for a comment.

The Archbishop of Liverpool Rt Rev Malcolm McMahon, celebrated a special Mass in St Patrick's RC Church, Toxteth, where an exhibition is taking place about her life.

Liverpool was the second UK city where Mother Teresa established a convent and it was one of the final cities she visited on her last trip in 1996, the year before her death.

Plans for new M56 junction to ease congestion

You can find out about plans for a new junction on the M56 in Cheshire today. 

The 11a is being designed to ease traffic congestion, relieve pressure on junction 12 and improve connections to the Mersey Gateway. 

An information event will be held from 10:00 - 20:00 at Runcorn Linnets Football Club in Murdishaw Avenue.

A man has been charged with murder over the death of a doorman who was stabbed outside a bar in St Helens.

Daniel Fox, 29, from St Helens, was found with a knife wound in Westfield Street and North John Street at about 03:20 BST on Friday.

A post-mortem examination found he died as a result of a single stab wound to his body.

Leighton William Holt, 20, of Custley Hey, Stockbridge Village, is due before Liverpool Magistrates' Court later.
