Trafford Council says it has helped free up 106 bed spaces since 16 March to take pressure off hospitals dealing with the coronavirus.

The council is working with health commissioners, care organisations and other partners to expand the rapid discharge service at hospitals across the area, which allows patients with less critical conditions to be transported home.

The council's community staff have been providing home care and food packages for recovering patients.

It says it has also opened up extra capacity in care homes for patients who are unable to return home.

Councillor Jo Harding, executive member for adult services, said: "Staff are doing an incredible job. They are helping to free up vital bed space and this is helping to save lives and reduce the pressure on our hospitals at a critical time."
