Tram crash: Recap

Ben Truslove

BBC News Online

So, to recap, at about about 14:50 today a tram and a van were involved in a crash on University Boulevard, derailing the tram.

Passengers described a loud bang and screaming from people who "feared it would roll over".

Four people were injured and needed treatment, NET said.

BBC

Since the crash, engineers have been working to put the tram back on its tracks but it has forced the closure of University Boulevard in both directions.

The jam has caused severe congestion across the city, with Nottingham buses reporting two hour delays and the "worst traffic in eight years".

Drivers have been warned to stay off the roads if possible this evening as University Boulevard is expected to remain shut.

This is the current traffic situation outside BBC Nottingham at the bottom of London Road. Pretty crazy for gone 19:00 on a Wednesday evening.

'If you don't have to travel, don't bother'

Weary reporter Jack Maclaren has just returned to BBC Nottingham HQ after spending almost four hours stuck in traffic.

"I left the BBC at 14:45 to go to Attenborough - normally a 15, 20 minute drive.

"I was travelling down University Boulevard and saw everybody doing u-turns - I kept going, wondering what was happening, for another five minutes and then I realised the awful truth.

London Road
BBC

"They were just turning everyone back before they got too irate. Eventually I got to Attenborough 90 mins after I left. Coming back I thought 'oh it probably won't be as bad'. I couldn't have been more wrong. It's taken me just over two hours.

"I tried an alternative route, using back roads but it didn't work. It was horrific, I don't think it would have mattered which way I went.

"If you don't have to travel tonight, don't bother. It's horrendous."

Tram crash: Uni Boulevard 'closed for the evening'

BBC News Travel

University Boulevard is still shut both ways between Woodside Road and Clifton Boulevard because of that tram derailment and it's causing major congestion right across the city.

Unfortunately it sounds like it will be shut for the rest of the evening.

BBC

Obviously all the surrounding routes are absolutely solid, in fact Clifton Boulevard is stationary between the Nottingham Knight and the QMC.

The A453 is also stationary heading in through Clifton from the Crusader Island and is very slow in the opposite direction.

Queen's Drive is absolutely solid both ways as is Derby Road, Trent Bridge and Loughborough Road. WIlford Lane in West Bridgford is also looking incredibly slow.

Leicester attack: Teen chooses not to give evidence

Press Association

A teenager accused of attempting to bludgeon a rape victim to death in an act of "desolating wickedness" has opted not to give evidence in his defence.

The 17-year-old claimed through his legal team that he intended to render the victim unconscious, but did not intend to end her life after arming himself with a paving slab in Leicester's Victoria Park on 3 July.

The teen, who cannot be named because of his age, admits rape and causing grievous bodily harm with intent - but denies attempted murder.

The boy's defence case was concluded in less than a minute by his QC.

In the closing speech, prosecutor Gordon Aspden claimed the attack was an attempt to "silence" the victim.

The jury is expected to retire after the judge's summing up later today.
