Crash victim wants more protection from blundering drivers

BBC Radio Nottingham

A man who was hit by a car making an illegal turn in Nottingham city centre says something should be done to keep people safe.

Lee Garland said the crossing on Beck Street was on green when he was clipped by the car that had turned off Huntingdon Street.

The city council said it was aware some people break the law but the signage was more than adequate and that options for further changes would lead to traffic congestion and delays unless they were given further enforcement powers by the government.

The prosecutor has said he was "badly beaten, in effect he was tortured for information".

Mr Jogiya's head was beaten, causing a bleed on the brain and traumatic brain injury. One of his biceps was ripped away from the bone, six of his ribs on the left side were broken and he had multiple injuries to his hands and fingers.

The court heard he had also suffered 21 distinctive circular injuries to the torso and shoulder area, suggestive of something being used to inflict repeated pain.

All four men deny killing him.

Leicester jeweller 'tortured for security codes'

Gavin Bevis

BBC News

Four men have gone on trial charged with killing 74-year-old Leicester jeweller Ramniklal Jogiya.

The prosecution told Birmingham Crown Court Mr Jogiya was kidnapped by the group after locking up his shop in Belgrave Road on 24 January and then tortured until he gave up the codes to turn off the burglar alarm and access the safe containing gold jewellery.

The jury was told Mr Jogiya was dumped near the village of Stoughton after giving up the information and died "as a direct result of his injuries".

The group then found themselves unable to get inside the safe due to a time delay feature that meant it couldn't be opened for 12 hours, even with the correct codes.
