  14. Shilton questions extra cap honour for Rooney

    BBC Sport

Former Derby, Forest and Leicester goalkeeper Peter Shilton said caps should not be "given out like gifts" after it was announced Wayne Rooney would make a one-off return to the national side.

Rooney, who retired from international football in 2017, is due to pick up his 120th cap when he forms part of the England squad that faces the United States at Wembley on 15 November.

The Football Association said the game was an opportunity to "honour" the 33-year-old striker's "record-breaking international career".

    Peter Shilton

Shilton, who won 125 caps for England, said: "I think there are better ways to do it. We could have a presentation on the pitch.

"I think if he was picked on merit, fair enough. But I don't think you can give caps out like gifts.

"You have got to be careful it doesn't set a precedent. It's great Wayne's foundation are going to get money from this game, but that is going to happen whether Wayne plays or not."

    Gavin Bevis

    BBC News

A 56-year-old man from Leicestershire has pleaded guilty to child sex abuse dating back to the 1980s.

Police said Richard Packer, of Freemans Lane, Burbage, sexually abused three female victims over a 14-year period between 1989 and 2003.

They said the assaults began when the girls were aged seven and eight, and continued into their teenage years.

Packer admitted four counts of indecently assaulting a female child at Leicester Crown Court and is due to be sentenced on 26 November.

    Leicester Crown Court

Det Con Anna Blockley, the investigating officer, said: “Each of Packer’s victims have shown bravery in coming forward and telling us about the abuse they’ve suffered.

“Packer himself probably thought that they wouldn’t do such a thing and that his horrific actions would never bring him before the courts."

A fraudster who duped 340 people in a renewable energy share scam which netted him almost £7m has been sent to prison and ordered to pay back £1.9m.

Bristol Crown Court heard that Adrian Eyre, 64, from Derby, masterminded the elaborate investment fraud.

Eyre showed potential investors, many of whom were vulnerable pensioners, a glossy brochure for Oxford Renewable Fuel Ltd and made false claims about teams of scientists, other investors and technology.

Eyre was convicted of three counts of fraud by false representation and has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years.
