  6. East Midlands pair among 'stranded' migrant rescuers

    Gavin Bevis

    BBC News

A father-of-two from Derbyshire and a mechanic from Nottingham are among four British sailors stranded off Sicily while facing an investigation for allegedly assisting illegal migration.

The group is calling on Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt to intervene to free them and the 47 people they say they have saved from the sea.

The crew of Sea-Watch 3 rescued the men and boys from the Mediterranean as their inflatable vessel was losing air and were allowed to shelter offshore from Syracuse, Sicily, from storms.

But they say they're being prevented from leaving the boat, or local waters, while they are being investigated after a call from Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini.

    Sea-Watch 3 crew

Brendan Woodhouse, 42, from near Matlock, said: "We are not allowed to land, nor are we allowed to leave, nor is the ship allowed to sail away.

"We are being threatened with a criminal investigation for saving people's lives at sea.

"We would ask Jeremy Hunt to apply some pressure on the Italian authorities to accept 47 people on board and allow the crew to leave."

Also on the vessel are Kim Heaton-Heather, 37, from Brighton, Jon Stone, 32, from Lincoln, and Dan Bebawi, 39, from Nottingham.
