  3. Council-owned shopping centres 'lose £11m in value'

    BBC Shropshire

Three shopping centres in Shrewsbury are now worth £11m less than the £51m Shropshire Council paid for them last year, according to a recent valuation.

    Darwin Shopping Centre entrance

In January 2018, the local authority bought the Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside centres with the aim of making the town a "destination" and saving jobs.

But leader Peter Nutting's revealed they've been recently valued at £11m less - however, he said he was still pleased with how they were performing.

The council also said refurbishment work on the middle level of the Darwin centre would start this autumn with new lighting, flooring, ceiling design and refurbished toilets.

Its plan for the three centres includes more leisure facilities and fewer retail spaces.

  4. Setbacks but departing NHS chief reckons 'better future'

    Allen Cook

    BBC News

The departing boss of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) says there are challenges ahead, but that the foundations have been laid for "a better future".

Simon Wright is leaving to take up another post next month.

Critics may well disagree with his assessment as there have been calls for him to resign after a string of serious setbacks for the trust.

In 2017, then Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt ordered a review into baby deaths at SaTH, initially into at least seven but it's since been widened several times to more than 250.

On top of that and having been subject to repeated warnings over patient safety across two sites, it was placed in special measures in November.

The Care Quality Commission then rated it as inadequate and said emergency and maternity services at its two hospitals were unsafe.

    Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

Mr Wright also oversaw a plan to close Telford's A&E overnight due to staff shortages which was scrapped in November when SATH said it had attracted enough workers to maintain a 24/7 service.

There's also been the row plans over emergency care in the county with health bosses deciding in January to downgrade Telford's A&E and house the main centre, along with key maternity services, in Shrewsbury.

An independent NHS panel is currently assessing those plans after they were called in by Telford & Wrekin Council.

  5. BreakingChief of beleaguered NHS trust set to leave

The chief executive of an under-fire hospital trust is going to leave after nearly four years in the role.

    Simon Wright

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) said Simon Wright was leaving to take up another role on 22 July.

The trust was put in special measures in November, due to concerns about maternity and emergency services, meaning inspectors no longer trusted it to run itself alone.

SaTH is also being investigated over baby deaths, with the scope of a review widened to include the concerns of 250 families.

  6. Buildings and cars 'damaged by vandals throwing rocks'

    BBC Shropshire

Cars and buildings in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, have been damaged by vandals throwing rocks and rubble from a cliff-top path, local residents say.

    Smashed roof tiles

The missiles have come down on Underhill Street in Low Town and roof riles and car windscreens have been smashed.

West Mercia Police said it had increased patrols on the cliff-top and has appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

  13. Jail tours company may make prison purchase bid

A company which runs tours at Shrewsbury's former prison says it might be interested in buying part of it.

The jail, which closed in 2013, has been put up for sale by its owners The Trevor Osborne Group and interested parties have been given five weeks to put forward a bid for the site.

Joel Campbell from The Campbell Group said "I think we'll take a look at it, if we can put together the funds for it and make it work and make it add up, then certainly I think we'll look at it."

But Mr Campbell added he wasn't a property developer and would only be interested in "the parts behind the walls".
