    Police forces are urging the public to give up any guns under a two-week surrender starting today.

    Anyone handing over a firearm at their local police station during the fortnight will not face prosecution for illegal possession.

    Speaking at the launch in Birmingham, Assistant Chief Constable Helen McMillan, National Police Chiefs' Council lead for criminal use of firearms, said gun crime had risen in the past year and they wanted weapons out of harm's way.

  11. Road change plans aim to cut driving frustrations

    People living in part of Stoke-on-Trent are being asked what they think of proposals to reduce congestion in the area.

    There are four main changes which the city council wants to make in the town of Stoke, with the aim of making it easier for drivers to get to local sites like the Spode factory and Stoke Minster.

    They include reversing the one-way system on South Wolfe Street so vehicles enter from Fleming Road and creating a one-way access into Kingsway from Church Street.

    There are also plans for new cycle lanes and better signs and the consultation is due to run until 24 November.

  12. Goalkeeper ready to benefit from England injury

    Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant says he's ready to take his chance with the news that Potters' number one Jack Butland has been ruled out for between four and six weeks.

    Butland suffered the injury during training with England ahead of their friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

    When the 24-year-old was also out for a large chunk of last season due to another injury, Grant featured 30 times in his place.

  13. NHS boss apologises over 'poor' care report

    One of the top health officials in Stoke-on-Trent has apologised to people in the city, after a regulator said some older people are having "poor" care experiences.

    People in the city found it hard to access a GP appointment "in a timely way" and many ended up at A&E, the Care Quality Commission said.

    A report by the watchdog found there were long waits in A&E and older people were often delayed in hospital despite being ready to leave.

  15. Bedroom raids find £60k of cannabis plants

    Cannabis plants with a street value of up to £60,000 have been found in the upstairs bedrooms of a house in Stoke-on-Trent.

    Staffordshire Police raided the home on Heathcote Road, Longton today and found 150 of the plants.

    Officers say nobody was inside the house at the time and they're now working to track down who was behind it.
