The £27m project to raise the Middle Level Barrier bank between Earith and Welmore Lake sluice, and part of the South Level Barrier bank between Sutton Gault and Chain Corner, began in 2017 and will take four years to complete.

The latest phase includes a temporary bridge and construction of an access route between Earith and Mepal.

  2. Police ask for CCTV footage in Witham rape investigation

Essex Police is asking for residents of the River Walk area of Witham with CCTV cameras at their houses to contact detectives investigating a rape on 21 July.

Det Ch Insp Greg Wood said: "As local people will know, there are a number of routes that provide entry to the riverside walk.

"If you live in the surrounding area that is close to the riverside walk – for example in Guithavon Road, Guithavon Valley, Mill Lane or Chelmer Road – and you have CCTV which would have been working between 22:00 on 20 July and 01:00 on 21 July, we want to hear from you."

It's being led by the government national housing agency Homes England rather than private developers - so far a primary school has been built and 140 homes are already occupied.

The agency said it will now focus on building a town centre (below) and 3,500 more homes, including 1,000 flats.

Some 40% of the homes have been planned to help young people on to the property ladder, Homes England said.
