  12. GMB union 'deeply disappointed' over Uber decision

    Sue Nicholson

    BBC News

    Uber app

The GMB union has said it is "deeply disappointed" at Brighton and Hove City Council's decision to extend Uber's licence to operate a taxi service for a further six months.

The driver's union has held a series of demonstrations in the city over recent months calling for an end to the "Wild West" situation brought about by deregulation of the taxi and private hire industry.

It said the decision had been taken "behind closed doors" and effectively gave Uber "carte blanche to continue operating in Brighton and Hove with impunity".

Quote Message: GMB is deeply disappointed by Brighton and Hove City Council’s absurd decision today to give Uber a blank cheque to continue operating in the city.
Quote Message: If Brighton and Hove had no concerns, they would have extended the licence for the full five year term.
Quote Message: The fact they have limited renewal to six months suggests that there are concerns that they are failing to fully disclose to the public." from Justin Bowden GMB National Secretary

  15. Uber's licence to operate in Brighton extended for six months

    Sue Nicholson

    BBC News

    Uber app

Brighton and Hove City Council has extended Uber’s licence to operate a taxi service in the city for a further six months.

The council had come under pressure not to renew its licence amid claims by the GMB union that hundreds of Uber drivers were travelling down to the city from across the country, using taxis falling short of the required standards.

It followed Transport for London's (TfL) decision to deny Uber a new licence in the capital over security and safety concerns.

Brighton and Hove City Council said it would use the next six months to monitor the outcome of TfL's decision, and to negotiate with Uber about a number of proposed conditions for operating.

In a statement, Uber said it was delighted that it could continue operating in Brighton and Hove, and more "choice and competition" was good for consumers.

Quote Message: Uber has been embraced in Brighton with around 10,000 riders using the app in the city every week.
Quote Message: Passengers love being able to book a ride at the touch of a button, pay without needing cash and track their car in real time." from Fred Jones Head of Cities, Uber
