Cleveland Fire Brigade appeal for working fire alarms

Cleveland Fire Brigade says "you are four times more likely to die in a fire" if you don't have a smoke detector.

The brigade has announced that in more than a third of fires which they attended between April and June there were no smoke alarms.

They are urging people to make sure they have a working device on every floor of their home.

Man and woman attacked in Guisborough

A man and a woman have been assaulted outside a pub in Guisborough.

A fight broke inside the Kings Head Inn and continued outside, where a suspect pushed the victims to the ground.

The 37-year-old man was treated for a head wound while the 44-year-old woman was left with a broken jaw.

Motorcyclist injured after hitting sign

A motorcyclist has been left with serious injuries after a crash in County Durham this morning.

The rider lost control of his Yamaha YZF on the A182 Front Street, South Hetton, at 06:45.

He hit a sign in the and landed on the grass verge.

He is now being treated for head and chest injuries at James Cook Hospital.

Thug jailed over violent attack on girlfriend after a night out

North of England cities get £15m 'cultural powerhouse' boost

A £15m cash fund to boost culture and creativity across the North of England has been announced by the government.

Culture Secretary Karen Bradley said the money would be given "to develop inspirational projects that could have a transformative local effect".

She said it would be a legacy from next year's Great Exhibition Of The North, to be held in Newcastle and Gateshead.

Taxi driver wanted by police

Police are trying to find a taxi driver who was involved in a crash with a cyclist near Guisborough.

The 42-year-old cyclist suffered minor injuries and his bike was damaged after he was hit by a silver taxi believed to be a Vauxhall.

The incident took place on 30 July between Dunsdale and Guisborough and the driver of the taxi left before police arrived.

CCTV released following criminal damage

A man is being sought by police after damage was caused at a Newcastle bookmakers.

The incident at Ladbrokes on St Andrew Street happened at about 01:00 on 8 July, when a man smashed a gaming machine with a stool before leaving in the direction of China Town.

Police have now released an image of a man they want to speak to as he was in the bookmakers at the time of the attack.

Northumberland businesses visited by bailiffs

BBC Newcastle

Businesses who refused to pay a new tax in Hexham have been visited by bailiffs over the past fortnight.

The Hexham Business Improvement District is designed to boost the town's economy and is paid for by charging traders on top of their business rates.

In April more than a hundred businesses were fined by magistrates for outstanding payments and now some who have not paid the levy are being chased for court costs.

Northumberland County Council says the money is being used to deliver better marketing and events, improvement to access, signage and the trading environment.

Gaston Ramirez has completed his move away from Middlesbrough FC, the club has confirmed.

The Uruguayan has joined Italian side Sampdoria on a permanent deal.

Ramirez made 44 appearances in 18 months at Boro, scoring nine goals.

Man charged over cannabis farm

An update on a story we brought you earlier:

A 27-year-old man has now been charged with production of cannabis in Redcar.

The cannabis recovered by police had a street value of about £700,000.

The man is due to appear in court this morning.

A Darlington man is missing after leaving his house last night.

Carl Taylor, 44, was last seen at his home in Roker Close without "any means to support himself".

Insp Caroline Shields said they are appealing to the public to keep an eye out for Mr Taylor and that his disappearance is completely "out of character".

Burglars steal safes from plant hire firm

Safes containing cash and foreign currency have been stolen by burglars in County Durham.

Thieves broke into H I'Anson and Sons Plant Hire near West Auckland on Tuesday and ransacked the building.

Police say a man and a woman who were in the area could have vital information.

Drugs seized in Redcar police raid

Cannabis with a street value of about £700,000 has been recovered from an address in Redcar.

A warrant executed yesterday in Henry Street by Cleveland Police also found that the electric supply into the property had been bypassed.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the production of cannabis and remains in police custody.

Cowell backs Ant to make full recovery from rehab

Simon Cowell has backed Ant McPartlin to make a full recovery as the star receives treatment for depression, as well as alcohol and substance abuse.

The 41-year-old co-host of Britain's Got Talent, Saturday Night Takeaway andI'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! checked into rehab in June.

Cowell - who has worked with McPartlin for 16 years - told The Sun: "All I can tell you about Ant is he's one of the most genuine people you'll ever meet.

"He hasn't changed in all the years I've known him.

"I don't know details behind the scenes, but when someone has the courage to own it, deal with it, made a public statement, we would a million per cent support him. I think he'll be fine."
