A threatened Newcastle household waste and recycling centre could be saved from closure according to opposition councillors.
Brunswick Household Waste and Recycling Centre was on the hit list to help save Newcastle City Council £60m.
Now opposition councillors say the closure plan could be shelved after healthier news that waste services are outperforming cash-flow predictions.
Lib Dem Colin Ferguson says the waste service is making more than enough to sustain Brunswick.
But Councillor Nick Kemp, Labour’s cabinet member for environment and climate change, said: “There are no immediate plans to close Brunswick – the proposed closure is set out in the budget consultation documents for March 2020 and will be subject to further review.
He added that the city-wide waste strategy was having a positive impact but planning the way forward was not about knee-jerk reactions."
Motorists are being reminded about some overnight road closures this weekend.
Staff at a car showroom in Stockton were surprised to find a ferret wandering around among the cars for sale.
An RSPCA officer was called to collect the animal from the Volvo dealership at Preston Farm Business Park.
It is not known if the small, albino male has been abandoned or was an escaped pet, but he is now being cared for at the RSPCA's Great Ayton Animal Centre in Middlesbrough.
Shane Lynn, from the RSPCA, said: “I’m used to seeing Jaguars, Pandas, Mustangs and even Beetles in car showrooms - but a ferret is definitely a new model."Copyright: RSPCA
He added: “I think he’s come from a home environment as he is really friendly and has been neutered but sadly he isn’t microchipped.
"Hopefully his owner will come forward and we'll be able to reunite them."
