  2. Councillors oppose Police Commissioner being on Fire Authority

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

    Nic Marko

Councillors have voiced concerns over plans to allow the Police and Crime Commissioner to sit on Cleveland Fire Authority.

Under new amendments in legislation, the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) could request to sit on the fire authority.

If allowed to do so, the PCC would have voting rights and will be able to delegate a deputy to attend and speak, although the deputy won't have voting rights.

Councillor Luke Frost, Stockton Borough Council representative on the authority, said: “I think the Police and Crime Commissioner has enough on his hands with what he has.

“It doesn’t matter who that Police and Crime Commissioner is, that would make a difference to the balance of the fire authority, whether it’s Labour, Conservative, Independent, it will have an impact.”

The practice is currently in place in metropolitan and county fire authorities.

Following the revelations, the company's shares are set to be kicked off the stock exchange.

The news will be a blow for Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley, who owns a 19% stake in the firm.
