    In Dumfries and Galloway this evening the storm force winds ease, however still widespread gales at first, severe in places.

    Further wintry showers with significant accumulations of snow over the hills, the combined wind and snow will lead to temporary blizzard conditions on high road routes. There may be some wintry deposits to low levels too.

  4. Festive message

    A festive drink driving campaign is touring Dumfries and Galloway, with officers pushing the message: "Don't touch the throttle if you've had a bottle".


    Det Con Scott Jardine, of Police Scotland, said they were receiving positive feedback to the new limit in Scotland.

    "We speak to members of the public about the change in the drink driving law and they're all saying it's a very, very good idea," he said.

    "It's keeping them safe, it's keeping members of their family safe, it's keeping everyone in Dumfries safe."

  6. Whitesands plans

    A public event is being held in Dumfries tonight on plans for the Whitesands.

    The area is prone to flooding and the council is proposing a £12m plan to tackle the problem subject to Scottish government funding.

    Some retailers have started a petition against the proposals saying cheaper alternatives have not been properly explored.

    The event is between 18:30 and 20:00 at St George's Church Hall in Dumfries.

    Borders trainer Stuart Coltherd is off to a flyer at Hexham this afternoon.

    Community resilience teams are making a "big difference" in keeping minor roads and pavements in the Borders clear.

    Scottish Borders Council has laid down its priority gritting routes in its winter service plan.

    But it is relying on local communities to salt smaller roads and paths.

  14. Ferry collision

    Stena Line services from Cairnryan to Belfast have been cancelled after a ferry collided with part of the south west Scotland terminal.


    The incident happened as the vessel was coming into dock early on Tuesday.

    Sailings between the Dumfries and Galloway port and Belfast have been suspended since the incident to allow the ship to be examined.

    Netherdale in Galashiels will play host all three of Scotland's under 20 shadow Six Nations games - against Wales, Italy and Ireland - next February.

  17. New Kirkcudbright market?

    A continental market could become a regular event in Kirkcudbright, under new plans lodged with Dumfries and Galloway Council.

    If councillors agree, the four-day markets would be held in the Harbour Square car park up to six times a year.

    It would result in the temporary loss of 71 off-street car parking spaces.

    The Stewartry area committee will consider the proposals next week.

  18. Attitude change

    Borders teenagers' attitudes appear to be changing towards smoking, drinking and taking drugs.


    Some 1,700 of the region's 13 and 15-year-olds were questioned for the latest survey of lifestyle and substance abuse - the first for four years.

    The numbers using cigarettes and alcohol were both down.

    Frequent wintry showers, falling as a mix of rain, sleet and hail to low levels.

    On hills, high ground and the highest road routes, including the M74, these showers will be of snow, leading to hazardous driving conditions and poor visibility, with temporary blizzard conditions as the showers move overhead.

    Gas pipeline works are set to cause traffic diversions in the centre of Galashiels in the new year.

    The organisers of the Big Burns Supper are planning a "festival within a festival" for north-west Dumfries.


    A pop-up show by folk-rock band Skerryvore will be among the highlights of the programme.

    An outreach scheme will encourage people from Lochside, Lincluden, Summerhill and Stakeford to take part in the Burns Night street carnival.

  28. Hospital plans

    Formal plans have been tabled for a new district general hospital in Dumfries.

    The £200m project is being recommended for approval by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

    The planned 350-bed complex is earmarked to be built on farmland off the Garroch roundabout at the western end of the town's by-pass.

  31. Overseas patient expense

    Scottish health boards are chasing overseas patients for £1.86m in unpaid hospital bills, according to data obtained by BBC Scotland.

    The amount of debt owed to Scottish health boards by foreign patients has more than doubled since 2012

    Most debt is for treatment given in the past year, but one board is still pursuing a bill from 2003.

    NHS Borders has £17,409 outstanding while NHS Dumfries and Galloway has a figure of just £9,685.

    The front page of today's Dumfries and Galloway Standard features the story of a fatal accident on the A76 in the region on Monday.

  34. Travel problems

    On the ferries Stena Line's services between Cairnryan and Belfast are currently cancelled. And P&O says its Cairnryan to Larne sailings are operating but with delays of around two hours.

    Scotrail has suspended all services on the Stranraer to Ayr line - replacement bus services are being provided for passengers

    So far this morning black ice has been the main issue on many roads in the Borders. The A7 north of Stow is bad, say police - as, we hear, are roads around Kelso, Gordon - where there's a bit of snow too - Chirnside, Duns, Swinton and Smailholm.
