Adam Harris custody death: Police sergeant cleared

A police officer has been cleared of misconduct over the death of a man who fell ill after his arrest.

The death of Adam Harris, 34, in Tameside on 20 April 2018 led to an investigation of a custody sergeant from Greater Manchester Police.

But the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said his decision not to immediately send Mr Harris to hospital was "considered, and rationalised".

An inquest found Mr Harris died of cocaine and alcohol poisoning.

Police in Manchester 'committed' to reducing knife crime

Extra police officers will be deployed across Manchester every weekend of the summer in a new effort to tackle knife crime.

As well as officers conducting stop and searches, the council will be visiting schools to talk to children on the dangers of knife crime.

Police recorded 168 incidents between March and April.

Supt Umer Khan said: “The rise in knife crime has provoked concern and anxiety across communities so I am committed to addressing and reducing the number of attacks."

Ambulance crews battled to save man who fell into lake

Police say the man who died after falling into Windermere earlier this week was 57 and from Heversham, near Milnthorpe.

Emergency services were called to Glebe Road, one of the busiest tourist areas in the Lake District, just before 13:00 on Wednesday, and medical staff from the ambulance and air ambulance tried in vain to save the man's life.

Police say the coroner has been informed, and they have no reason to be suspicious about the man's death.

Hundreds of buildings still have 'unsafe' cladding

More than 200 high-rise buildings in England with cladding similar to that used on Grenfell Tower have yet to begin work to remove it.

Out of 328 buildings that still have aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding, 221 are awaiting work to start.

Events on Friday will mark the second anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire in which 72 people died.

Ahead of the second anniversary of the fire, campaigners projected messages on to tower blocks in Salford, Newcastle and London which they said were unsafe.

The government will pay £200m to remove ACM from privately owned blocks.

Plans for a 23-storey residential tower block in Salford have been approved by councillors despite a lack of affordable housing in the proposal.

Developers Silverlane have been given the green light to demolish parts of Vicarage Grove to build 272 apartments in three interlinked buildings, of four, six and 23 storeys, in Eccles.

Labour ward councillor Michael Wheeler said the additional homes in the centre would bring "immeasurable benefits" to the town centre and help drive down anti-social behaviour.

Conservative councillor Bob Clarke described the design as "appalling" and a "blot" on the landscape and was among those concerned about there being no affordable housing.

The application was approved with conditions that would allow the appearance to be softened.

The actor, 79, and about 60 pensioners demonstrated at MediaCityUK in Salford - the home of BBC 5 Live and BBC Sport.

"I don't think the BBC should be funding this at all - I think the government should be," he said.

Manchester's "most vulnerable people" are to be given priority for rehousing under new council plans.

As a result, 15,000 households have applied for the estimated 2,200 homes expected to become available by 2020.

Five hospitalised after festival 'ecstasy'

Five people needed hospital treatment after taking what is thought to have been a dangerous batch of ecstasy at Manchester's Parklife festival.

The victims were taken to two local hospitals in a critical condition on Saturday.

The Northern Care Alliance NHS Group said three remained in a stable condition and two had been discharged.

Drug awareness charity The Loop had earlier warned about a strong batch of MDMA, known as Skype.

Six arrested in Merseyside shooting murder probe

Six men have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a man who was shot dead in Netherton last June.

Miguel Reynolds, 21, from Manchester, was found with gunshot wounds in Assissian Crescent.

Two men were arrested after searches in Sefton earlier while four men were produced from prisons in Merseyside and the West Midlands, Merseyside Police said.

The men, aged between 20 and 30, were all from Sefton and were also held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.

The messages from survivors and bereaved family members come amid the second anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire on Friday.

One of them says: "2 years after Grenfell and this building is still covered in dangerous cladding".

Grenfell United said it "needed to send a strong message".

The projection on to the NV building in Salford, which has 246 flats, says it is "still covered in dangerous cladding" which is not covered by the government's cladding removal fund.

The developer of the building told the BBC "an urgent investigation is ongoing".

Homes have been evacuated, motorists stranded and trains cancelled as flooding has hit the North West and other parts of England.

The Environment Agency has issued 25 flood warnings and 64 alerts across the country.

The majority are across the Midlands and North West, although warnings are also in place near Whitby and in south-east London.

The Met Office has given yellow warnings for rain across Manchester, Liverpool and the North East.

Catalogue of failings at after-school playgroup

An after-school playgroup has been rated ‘inadequate’ after inspectors uncovered a catalogue of safeguarding failings.

Ofsted found that shortcomings at Playclub Unlimited in Stockport were compromising children’s welfare.

Manager Julie Longman says she ‘"takes full responsibility" for the outcome of the inspection, and has taken action to address the concerns as required by the education watchdog.

The club, based at Bradshaw Hall Primary School, in Cheadle Hulme, looks after youngsters aged between four and 11.
