Victims of Rochdale grooming gang 'failed again'

Victims of the Rochdale grooming gang have been "failed again", says a former detective who turned whistle-blower over the case, after it emerged four men have still not been deported a decade after they abused girls as young as 12.

Abdul Aziz, Adil Khan and Qari Abdul Rauf
Greater Manchester Police

Shabir Ahmed, 66, Qari Abdul Rauf, 50, Abdul Aziz, 48 and Adil Khan, 49, were among nine men convicted in 2012 of a catalogue of serious sex offences against vulnerable victims in Rochdale.

As the only groomers to have dual UK-Pakistani citizenship, they were at risk of being deported back to Pakistan.

In August, Aziz, Khan and Rauf lost an appeal against being stripped of their British citizenship.

Ahmed, known as "Daddy" in the gang, is still serving a 22-year jail term for rape but Rauf is back living at his home address in Rochdale and Aziz has also been seen in the town, locals say.

Khan's exact whereabouts are not known.

The Home Office will not say whether a decision has been made to deport any of the four with a spokesperson saying it "does not routinely comment on individual cases".

Maggie Oliver, who quit Greater Manchester Police and turned whistle-blower over the botched Rochdale inquiry, said victims have been "failed again and again and again" in a "disgraceful" manner.

Artwork highlights air pollution problems

A giant artwork at MediaCity is highlighting global air pollution as part of Greater Manchester's first Clean Air Week.

Pollution pod
BBC

The pollution pods replicate the air breathed in cities such as Beijing and New Delhi as well as in Manchester.

Simon Warburton, transport strategy director of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), said research shows air pollution in the region is linked to 1,200 premature deaths every year, with omissions from car exhaust pipes the main source.

The air pollution we have around our cities now is very different to the air pollution talked about in the 1950s and 1960s. This is air pollution you can't immediately see around us but it is having real impact on our health.

Simon WarburtonTfGM

He said the pollution pods gives "a real sense of what it feels like" making the "invisible more visible" for people to understand and contribute to plans to improve air quality in Greater Manchester.
