"It provides re-employment opportunities for a significant number of former Thomas Cook employees, and secures the future of retail sites up and down the UK High Street."

The firm’s collapse saw 150,000 customers returned to the UK, the biggest ever peacetime repatriation.

Thomas Cook staff protest over firm's collapse

Press Association

A former member of Thomas Cook cabin crew has demanded answers from the government during a protest outside the Business Department.

Gurprit Kaur, who was based at East Midlands Airport, said: "We want to know why this company was left to go out of business, and why the bosses paid themselves so much money, so we can stop this happening again in the future."

Mr Kaur found out he'd lost his job when he was woken in the night by a message telling him not to report for duty the next day.

He said: "Right up to the last minute, we were being told by the company that the business was financially sound, and not to believe the media hype.

Overflowing sewage could pause housing development

East Midlands Today

An overflowing sewage system in a village could halt a housing development.

The heavy rainfall has led to sewage overflowing out of grates in Hugglescote, Leicestershire, five times in the last few months, according to the parish council chairman.

Russell Johnson believes it is because of over-development in the area.

"I strongly believe it's housebuilders building houses, and the infrastructure for sewage is not there," he said.

North West Leicestershire District Council was due to vote on a 30-home development in the area, but officers are now advising that it is put off until the sewage issue is resolved.

Severn Trent has told East Midlands Today it is looking into the matter.
