Mum 'scarred physically and mentally by carjacking'

Officers investigating a carjacking that saw a four-week-old baby taken are issuing a fresh appeal, a year on from the incident.

Clare O'Neill was run over as she battled to stop the men driving off with baby Eliza, outsider outside her home in Acocks Green, Birmingham, on 19 July 2018.

Mother and daughter were reunited 45 minutes later, but Mrs O'Neill was left with injuries that she is still living with.

“Eliza will be 13 months old on Saturday, she said.

"She’s a beautiful, happy, engaging and active baby. She’s taking her first steps, chatting away and eating us out of house and home! We count our blessings every day that she was returned safely to us."

Clare said she still lives with anxiety as well as physical injuries.

"My achilles, back and hip hurt on a daily basis. My teeth are still numb and I only have 50% sensation in my elbow. I also still can’t fully bend one of my fingers."

No arrests have been made, said West Midlands Police.

JLR trials plastic recycling process for car parts

Plastic household waste, destined for landfill or incinerators could be used in the car manufacturing process, says carmaker Jaguar Land Rover.

The company is trialing a recycling process aimed at converting plastic waste into new premium-grade material which it says could be used for car parts and interiors.

The carmaker is working with chemical company BASF on a pilot project called ChemCycling, using plastics to replace fossil resources.

Pilot phase material is being used in a Jaguar I-Pace prototype to verify it meets the stringent safety requirements of the original part, said JLR.

Man due in court charged over shooting

A man is due in court today charged with conspiracy to murder a man who was shot dead in Birmingham.

Dante Mullings, 23, was one of three men in a car parked in Ladywood when a vehicle pulled up alongside and fired shots, West Midlands Police said.

He died at the scene, in Vincent Road West, and the other two men were injured.

Dior Jackson, 20, from Wadington Avenue in Great Barr, is set to appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court later.

Ihsaan Bernard, 20, from Anerley Road in Kingstanding, and 23-year-old Omami Bernard-Sewell, of no fixed address, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court and were remanded in custody.

About 650 million people watched the moment on television, and with others listening to coverage on the radio including Bill and June Kerney.

"My now-husband must have been Moon-struck on that night to do what he did," Mrs Kerney told PA.

"We were going from Birmingham New Street station to south Birmingham where I was living and we were listening on the radio to everything that was going on and then when we got to my bedsitter, a certain romantic person got down on one knee and proposed."

The couple have been married for 48 years and went on to rename their boat Apollo 11 in memory of the big occasion.

Three charged over 'drive-by' shooting

Three men have been charged with conspiring to kill a man shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Birmingham, police say.

Man jailed after attacking and dumping man on doorstep

A man has been jailed for beating a 70 year-old man before "leaving him for dead" on a doorstep.

Gurmukh Sing, 70, was found outside the White Road, Smethwick, address of Palvinder Hayre on 23 November and was taken to hospital where he died.

Earlier this month the court heard Mr Singh had suffered 19 rib fractures, along with a fracture to his sternum and an area around the throat. His right lung was also punctured.

The pair had been drinking together for most of the day before and during the morning before the fatal attack took place, said West Midlands Police.

Hayre, 51, had denied murder, but was found guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court today and told he would serve a minimum of 19 years less one day in prison.

Judge backs moving sex offender to 'community' unit

A man convicted of sexually assaulting his mother and who has "intrusive thoughts about attacking women" is set to leave a psychiatric hospital and live in a "community setting".

The man, who has learning difficulties and is under the welfare of Birmingham City Council, also told a psychiatrist he remained "certain that he will attack women unless closely supervised".

A judge has approved plans to move him to a residential unit after he has been deemed "fit for discharge".

In a written ruling after a hearing at the Court of Protection the judge said the man had engaged in a number of "programmes and therapeutic interventions" and deemed by his "multi-disciplinary team as being fit for discharge".

She said she accepted professionals' assessment of the man and had no doubt that it was in his best interests for him to be cared for in the planned community setting.

A vigil held in Wolverhampton this morning, to remember victims of so-called honour crimes, is the second in the city this week.

The meeting was to highlight what many feel is an underreported issue in Wolverhampton.

Councillor Rupinderjit Kaur, one of the organisiers, said she had lost two family members to honour killings, and another was "lucky to survive".

"They were murdered in India due to honour," she said.

"This isn't a culture, this is a crime."

Laura Mvula to receive honorary doctorate

The singer and composer Laura Mvula is going to be awarded an honorary doctorate by Birmingham City University later this month, for her "outstanding contribution to music".

The 32-year-old, who comes from the city, has won Ivor Novello and Mobo awards and also been nominated for awards at the Brits and for the Mercury Prize.

She will receive the honour from Sir Lenny Henry at a ceremony at Birmingham's Symphony Hall on 23 July.

"I'm humbled and delighted to be receiving such an immense honour," she said.

West Midlands house prices to see biggest rise in England

The West Midlands is predicted to see the biggest increase in house prices in England over the next two years, according to analysts from PwC.

Only Wales is expected to see faster growth in the UK.

PwC said it expected the price of the average house in the West Midlands to rise from £194,000 to £223,000 by 2022 and warns that this will make it hard for people move to find new jobs and will also have an impact on rental prices.

Two arrested after Sparkhill stabbing

Two men have been arrested after a man was fatally stabbed in Birmingham last week, police say.

Malik Hussain, 35, was found dead in Baker Street, Sparkhill, at about 23:20 on Friday.

A post-mortem examination revealed he died from two stab wounds.

A 25-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder and a 36-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender remain in police custody.

Three arrested over 'machete attack'

Two men and a teenager have been arrested in connection with a machete attack on a teenager in Great Barr on Tuesday night, police say.

They were arrested after officers spotted a BMW suspected of being linked to the attack at an address in Birkenshaw Road, on Wednesday, said West Midlands Police.

The 18-year-old suffered deep slash wounds to his arms and remains in hospital.

The man aged 29 and 35, and a 17-year-old were arrested on suspicion of wounding and remain in police custody.

More than 70 animals shot in the West Midlands

More than 70 animals were shot using air guns in the West Midlands last year, new figures show.

The RSPCA is calling for the licensing of air guns as figures reveal the charity received 767 reports of animals being shot across England and Wales, with 72 reports coming from the region.

Cats bore the brunt of the shootings with 258 of them and 73 dogs deliberately killed or maimed last year.

A large number of wild mammals and birds, including foxes, squirrels, swans and pigeons were targeted as well, it said.
