Rhubarb the cockerpoo helps make school feel like 'home'

A 14-week-old cockerpoo has been helping young students in South Yorkshire to learn.

Rhubarb is with students at Worsbrough Common Primary School for the new term, and is aimed at providing a calming atmosphere.

Headteacher Rebecca Paddock says it's part of her plan to make the school feel like "a home".

"Looking at the research, it does improve attendance. It gives the kids responsibility and they're wanting to read to her. She's really picked up the feeling in school."

Rhubarb lives with Ms Paddock and goes into school every day.

The dog is walked by students as part of their learning and is also used as a distraction technique for children who are upset.

Travellers site proposals for Wakefield rejected

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Plans to build a travellers site on green belt land in Wakefield have been rejected once again.

Landowners Thomas and Elizabeth Spaven had applied to create a six-pitch site on their plot at Carr Gate near the M62.

However, it was ruled that the development would put the health of children living there at risk.

Plans have been knocked back by Wakefield Council a number of times since 2012.

Council officers said noise and fumes from the motorway would prevent people living at the site from opening the windows of their caravans.

Batley plays host to Labour leadership contender Starmer

Kevin Larkin

Political reporter, BBC Radio Leeds

Batley's community centre was packed out this lunchtime, full of Labour Party members there to hear Sir Keir Starmer (pictured), one of the candidates to replace Jeremy Corbyn as party leader after Labour’s election defeat last month.

In the Q&A session from members at the end, the candidate was asked about anti-semitism.

There was also a plea on behalf of one member to not “throw the baby out with the bathwater” when it came to Jeremy Corbyn’s legacy.

The Shadow Brexit Secretary is running on a party unity ticket, saying he wants to bring together the whole party - from Corbynistas to Blairites.

But is a North London pro-Remain lawyer with a knighthood the man to win back those working class voters who went to the Conservatives in the election, costing the party four seats in West Yorkshire alone?

Keir Starmer says he is, pointing out that his dad worked in a factory and his mum was a nurse.

He also said being a Londoner is no barrier to his potential appeal in the North, saying: “In the last three and a half years, nobody in Yorkshire has said to me, ‘But you’re a Londoner’.

"They want to know, are you a decent fella? Are you listening to what we’re saying? And are you getting it? And that’s the way I’ve done politics.”

With the contest not being decided until April, there’s a lot of listening left for Keir Starmer and his fellow candidates for Labour leader.
