Hillsborough decision: Families' 'relief' at retrial ruling

Families of some of those who died in the Hillsborough disaster have spoken of their "relief" that the match commander, David Duckenfield, will face a retrial.

Earlier, a judge ruled that the former chief superintendent, now 74, should go on trial again for the gross negligence manslaughter of 95 Liverpool fans after a jury failed to reach a verdict in April.

Irene McGlone, whose husband Alan died in the crush (pictured above), said she was both relieved and "over the moon" at the news.

"I didn't sleep at all last night. I didn't think we'd get that result.”

Her daughter Amy was just five years old when her dad Alan died at Hillsborough. She said a retrial was the right decision.

"We haven’t even be able to have any closure, so still this many years later our lives are still on hold.

"And not only do we suffer as a family, but survivors are still suffering. And even like the next generation of our children, they’re still suffering because we can’t tell them that we’ve got an outcome yet."

Speaking from the Cunard building in Liverpool, John Traynor, the brother of Christopher and Kevin Traynor who both died in the disaster said he's "delighted” at the ruling.

“It's what we've been waiting for. Now we can plan our lives again now we know it's the 7 October."
