Partner jailed for murder of St Helens mother-of-five

A man who killed his partner in a "prolonged" attack, causing more than 100 injuries, has been jailed for life.

Carl Harrison, who previously admitted murder, making threats to kill and assault, stabbed mother-of-five Rachel Evans to death at his home in March.

The 47-year-old, of Hignett Avenue, St Helens, was ordered to serve a minimum of 18 years at Liverpool Crown Court.

Merseyside Police said it was hoped the sentence would give Ms Evans's children "even the smallest bit of closure".

Houghton Weavers singer dies at 69

Tony Berry, the lead singer of the Houghton Weavers, has died from cancer at the age of 69.

The folk band formed in 1975 in Westhoughton, Bolton and are well-known for songs including The Blackpool Belle and Sit Thi Deawn.

A message on the band's website said: "Tony was a wonderfully talented, thoughtful and kind person who touched the lives and hearts of so many over a lifetime of dedication to show business.

"Tony will be very sadly missed but will remain eternally in our hearts and thoughts."

The Beatles' first contract with Brian Epstein to be auctioned

The Beatles' first contract with manager Brian Epstein is expected to sell for about £300,000 at auction.

Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and their first drummer Pete Best signed the document on 24 January 1962, before achieving worldwide fame.

"[Epstein] stopped them eating on stage," Gabriel Heaton, a specialist at the Sotheby's auction house, said.

"He made sure they played the songs properly and coherently, and he got them bowing at the end of a set."

Liverpool Youth Offending Service receives 'good' rating

Liverpool's Youth Offending Service (YOS) has been rated "good" with some "outstanding" areas following an official inspection.

But the HM Inspector of Probation report found its out-of-court processes were "inadequate" and required improvement.

The YOS offers support to young offenders aged between 10 and 18 as well as the victims of their crimes.

A team of inspectors examined every aspect of the team's work in March.

Ambulance crews battled to save man who fell into lake

Police say the man who died after falling into Windermere earlier this week was 57 and from Heversham, near Milnthorpe.

Emergency services were called to Glebe Road, one of the busiest tourist areas in the Lake District, just before 13:00 on Wednesday, and medical staff from the ambulance and air ambulance tried in vain to save the man's life.

Police say the coroner has been informed, and they have no reason to be suspicious about the man's death.

Sir Ian McKellen extends 80th birthday tour

Sir Ian McKellen is extending his solo tour marking his 80th birthday year.

The actor has already performed at 80 venues, raising £2m for theatre charities by the time the current run ends in Orkney in August.

He has now announced 80 more shows, at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London's West End.

Sir Ian said the tour has been "a joyful birthday present to myself".

"I've played mainly in theatres I knew well as a young theatregoer and actor," he said.

"On my birthday, I was in Bolton Town Hall, where my dad used to work."

Sir Ian was born in Burnley and grew up in Wigan.

Disabled woman 'nearly died' after Bolton Council care cuts

A disabled woman whose care package was cut by more than half has told how she almost died after it was reduced.

Kim Jaye, who has difficulty carrying out basic tasks, ended up in intensive care after she split six stitches when she was left without a carer.

Bolton Council was criticised in a report for its "flawed assessment" of Ms Jaye's case which cut her care from 67 hours-a-week to 25.

The council apologised and said it was reviewing its assessment methods.

Robbie Williams invests in Liverpool arts school LMA

The ex-Take That star, who mentored the centre's LMA Choir during his time as an X Factor judge, will help the academy to expand globally, starting with the launch of a London campus.

He said he hoped to "motivate the next generation of pop stars".

Williams will hold a 20% stake, becoming a co-owner alongside founders Richard and Simon Wallace, and former Tesco chief executive Terry Leahy.

Hundreds of buildings still have 'unsafe' cladding

More than 200 high-rise buildings in England with cladding similar to that used on Grenfell Tower have yet to begin work to remove it.

Out of 328 buildings that still have aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding, 221 are awaiting work to start.

Events on Friday will mark the second anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire in which 72 people died.

Ahead of the second anniversary of the fire, campaigners projected messages on to tower blocks in Salford, Newcastle and London which they said were unsafe.

The government will pay £200m to remove ACM from privately owned blocks.

Final offers were received from five parties before Wednesday's deadline.

The successful bid met the criteria outlined by the administrators, including proof of funds for the next two years and EFL approval.

A man who admitted using online dating site Grindr in a plot to sexually abuse a child has been jailed.

Mauricio Vinas, 31, of Hopkins Close, St Helens, pleaded guilty to arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence.

Merseyside Police arrested Vinas in May after he arranged to meet another man on the social media site in order to commit a sexual offence against a child.

He was sentenced to 11 years at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday and handed a sexual harm prevention order and placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

There is currently a flood warning for the river at Shrewbridge Lodge with the Environment Agency saying more flooding is expected.

Jonathan told us that nearby houses weren't affected, despite the river spilling over neighbouring land.

Woman seriously hurt after being hit by a car

A woman has been seriously injured after she was struck by a car in Preston yesterday.

The 45-year-old woman was walking on Deepdale Road when she was hit by a Renault Megane at about 08:15 BST.

The driver of the car, a 37-year-old man from Preston, was not injured, said police.

Lancashire Police said she suffered leg and head injuries and appealed for anyone for information to come forward.
