Sonia Kataria

BBC News

A couple from Nottinghamshire who have spent 17 days in quarantine on a cruise ship hit by the coronavirus in Japan are back in the UK.

Alan and Vanessa Sandford boarded an evacuation flight and landed on Saturday, but were taken to NHS accommodation on the Wirral for a further two weeks in quarantine.

Mr Sandford said he was "relaxed" on the flight but now "nervous" to hear four people onboard the flight have tested positive for the virus.

The retired schoolteacher said: "We have both had swab tests and awaiting results anxiously now.

Tenerife sandstorm 'could be worst for 30 years'

Amy Woodfield

BBC News

A sandstorm from the Sahara disrupted flights in and out of Spain's Canary Islands over the weekend.

Phil Burley, from Nottinghamshire, has been living in Tenerife for the past 18 months and told BBC Radio Nottingham it could be the worst calima on the island for 30 years.

He said: "It's a bit like a misty or foggy morning but it's very dense and it's across the whole island.

"Often when you have a calima, if you look up on a sunny morning you'll see a haze in the sky, but it won't be more than that.

"This I'm told is a very unusual event, perhaps the worst calima they've seen here for 30 years.

"It's certainly caused a lot of disruption."

Egyptian goose chicks are reserve's first new arrivals

Neil Heath

BBC News Online

Staff at Attenborough Nature Reserve were greeted by the arrival of five Egyptian goose chicks this morning.

Tim Sexton, assistant manager of the Nottinghamshire reserve's visitor centre, said it is believed the adult pair had a nest in a kestrel box in the Wheatear Field area.

He said although the birds are called geese, they are actually a relative of the shelduck.

The birds are the reserve's first new arrivals of the year, he added.
