MPs to meet children's hospice boss over closure threat

BBC WM

The head of the Acorns Children's Hospice charity is due to meet MPs today, after announcing plans to close its Walsall site.

Acorns
BBC

The charity said an increase in care costs, reduced revenue from its shops and uncertainty over government funding means it can only afford to operate sites in Birmingham and Worcester.

The charity said it cost £10m a year to run its three sites.

Current spending figures are still being audited, but a spokesman said it looked likely that the charity's 2018-19 spending would exceed income by £1.6m.

Listeria outbreak: Call for swift inquiry to find cause

An investigation into a fatal outbreak of listeria's being urged to swiftly find out how the bacteria got into contaminated sandwiches supplied to hospitals across England.

Today, the Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed eight hospitals had reported cases linked to salads and/or sandwiches supplied by the Good Food Chain, which is based in Stone, Staffordshire.

Stone's Conservative MP, Sir Bill Cash, told the Commons he understood the firm had been supplied with meat produced by North Country Cooked Meats.

He urged Mr Hancock to find the exact cause and "exonerate the Good Food Chain if in fact that is the case".

The health secretary admitted it was a supply issue and "there's a complex supply chain in operation", adding that the investigation would be "full and thorough".

The food involved has been withdrawn and the Good Food Chain has previously said it's co-operating fully with authorities, also adding that it hoped the inquiry would be pursued with "urgency".

It added: "The underlying cause of it remains unclear."

The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, said there were nine confirmed cases in seven hospitals, including the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust where one person died.

They are all linked to contaminated sandwiches from a single supplier, the Good Food Chain, based in Stone, Staffordshire, which has withdrawn products and halted production.

Mr Hancock said there would be "severe consequences if there is any evidence of wrongdoing".

In a statement, the Good Food Chain said it was co-operating "fully and transparently with the Food Standards Agency and other authorities" and said it hoped the inquiry would be pursued with "urgency so the wider industry can learn any lessons as soon as possible".

Families to be moved in to homes despite toxic gas fears

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Kerry Ashdown

Dozens of families are set to be moved into affordable homes near a hazardous waste site, after concerns about toxic gas sparked delays.

Cannock Chase District Council HQ
BBC

Cannock Chase District Council had postponed nominating residents for 48 social housing homes on Chenet Chase, Cannock, near the site on Walkmill Lane, Bridgtown.

They made the decision in 2017 after the waste firm's operator, currently Axil Integrated Services, found risks associated with fire and the release of toxic gas could affect the new development's residents.

Since then, measures have been made to cut the risks including fitting a heatshield, attaching sprinklers to an apartment block and installing a hydrogen cyanide sensor.

The council says it'll now nominate residents to the local housing association for the 48 empty homes but there will be 'full disclosure' on the risks.
