Taxi fare hikes to £2 per mile

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Taxi fares on the Isle of Wight will increase by 20p per mile — the first price hike in six years.

In January, Isle of Wight Councillors voted to increase the cost per mile for taxi fares by 10p per mile and the initial cost of flagging down a taxi was to rise by 50p.

However, 15 per cent of the island's taxi drivers made representations to the council with many objecting to the plans and

Now, the cost per mile will be increased to £2, while the cost of flagging down a taxi will stay at £3.

This will only apply to journeys between 8am and 10pm and late night journeys, or ones on public holidays, will remain the same.

Visitors urged to stay away from animals

Visitors to the New Forest are being urged to keep their distance from the national park’s free-roaming animals amid concern many people are getting too close to them.

Head agister Jonathan Gerrelli said: "Most New Forest ponies and donkeys are even-tempered animals and often come close to visitors, but they are not used to being handled and should be left alone.

"The animals may look friendly but can bite or kick, especially when they have young with them."

Treating the animals as tame encourages them to pester people and hang around busy roads and car parks putting them at risk of road accidents, the New Forest National Park Authority said.

New Forest ponies are well adapted to thrive all year round in the wild and there is no need to feed them, it added.
