Man wanted on assault charge could be in Yorkshire

Police searching for a man who failed to turn up to court in connection with a serious assault in the West Midlands believe he could have travelled to Yorkshire.

'Vital' next phase of Leeds flood scheme confirmed

Work on the next phase of a £76m scheme to protect Leeds from the risk of flooding is due to begin later this year it has been confirmed.

A contract signed today follows planning approval which was granted earlier this month.

Leeds City Council says work will begin later this year along the River Aire, including the Kirkstall Corridor and upstream, which were badly hit by the Christmas floods in 2015.

December 2015 was the wettest in a century and the UK was hit by storms Desmond, Eva and Frank during the month.

Defences along the 8-kilometre stretch upstream of Leeds Station will focus on the Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills, Kirkstall Abbey and Kirkstall Meadows.

Leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Judith Blake said: "This is a hugely important milestone for Leeds, as it commits us to getting this vital work done as soon as possible."

Leeds United winger Jack Clarke close to joining Tottenham

Leeds United winger Jack Clarke is close to completing a move to Premier League side Tottenham.

Negotiations have advanced far enough for the Championship club to let the 18-year-old travel south for a medical.

It is understood a fee in the region of £10m has been agreed, with further payments scheduled if certain clauses are met.

Clarke came through the youth system at Leeds and made his first-team debut on 6 October last year against Brentford, going on to make 25 appearances.

A missing woman from Bradford, whose 999 call sparked an urgent appeal to find her, has been found safe and well.

Paula Pietrzykowska was reported missing on Tuesday, but West Yorkshire Police say she has now been found.

Five hurt in 'serious' crash at East Ardsley

Five people were injured in a "serious" crash in West Yorkshire early this morning, police have confirmed.

It happened on the A650 Bradford Road in East Ardsley at about 06:45 when a black VW Golf was in collision with several other vehicles near the junction with Woodhouse Lane.

All five casualties were in the Golf, police say, with no other serious injuries from the other vehicles involved.

A road closure remains in place between Junction 41 of the M1 and Thorpe Lane, with drivers being advised to avoid the area.

The closure is likely to be in place for several hours as emergency services respond to the incident, police say.

Anyone who saw what happened is being asked to contact police.

A650 closed for several hours after 'serious' crash

Drivers in West Yorkshire are being warned that the A650 is likely to be closed for several hours after a "serious" crash.

The incident happened at about 07:00 between Westerton Road and Junction 41 of the M1 at Carr Gate.

The road is currently closed in both directions in that area and motorists are being warned to avoid the area if possible. Diversions are in place.

Work on Leeds Clean Air Zone cameras gets under way

The installation of cameras which will be used to monitor vehicles entering a planned Clean Air Zone in Leeds is due to begin today.


Over 100 cameras are being placed around the city so the highest polluting lorries, buses and taxis can be charged up to £50.

Leeds City Council was asked to tackle air pollution as a priority after roads in the city were identified as likely to fail legal air quality levels by 2020.

The zone was supposed to be up and running at the start of next year but it was recently announced that it had been delayed because of problems with the technology.

A revised date for the scheme to start in Leeds has not yet been announced.

Two young girls have gone missing from Bradford overnight, police say.

Officers say they are "concerned" about the welfare of Millie Trueman and Charlee Urso, who are both 13 years old.

One of the girls is thought to be wearing her school uniform of black trousers, a black polo top and a blue and yellow tie.

Anyone who sees them is urged to contact the West Yorkshire force.

Appeal after sex attack in Leeds park

Police in Leeds are appealing for help to find a man who is said to have sexually assaulted a woman in a park yesterday.

The woman was walking through Golden Acre Park, on Otley Road, Bramhope, shortly after midday when the attack happened.

West Yorkshire Police said she fought the attacker off who then ran towards the main car park.

He is described as white, about 5ft 7ins to 5ft 10ins tall, with straight black hair which was below his ear.

He was wearing a bright blue/turquoise t-shirt and black tracksuit bottoms and would have been covered in mud from the struggle.

'Urgent' appeal to find missing Bradford woman

Police officers in Bradford are urgently trying to find a woman who went missing shortly after making a 999 call.

West Yorkshire Police said Paula Pietrzykowska, from Great Horton Road, Bradford, made the emergency call earlier today and has not been seen since.

She is described as being of slim build and approximately 5ft 5ins tall.

Paula is known to frequent the Horton Park area of the city.

Man attacked then hit by car in Brighouse

A 28-year-old man suffered a broken pelvis after a row outside a pub ended up with him being hit by a car, West Yorkshire Police say.


It happened in Brighouse last night.

Officers were called at about 22:15 to West Park Street to a report the man had been attacked after an arguement.

He was then involved in a road traffic collision with a red BMW and taken to hospital with the fractured pelvis.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding and remains in police custody.

Missing Leeds woman found 'safe and well'

A Leeds woman who went missing on Monday has been found, according to police.

Kelly Hargreaves was reported missing yesterday morning.

The 32-year-old has been found "safe and well", police say.

The West Yorkshire force has thanked people for sharing the appeal over her disappearance.

Appeal to next PM over rising number of cyber sex crimes

The number of cyber-related sex crimes involving children has more than doubled in Yorkshire and the Humber region over the past four years.


Figures from the NSPCC show almost 1,500 cases were recorded in the last year, compared to just over 700 three years ago.

Helen Westerman from the charity says: "We're really concerned that we've seen a huge increase in the number of police-recorded offences against children relating to sex crimes.

"Twenty-two cyber-related sex crimes being reported a day in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the figures have doubled in the last five years."

The charity is calling on the next prime minister to prioritise online safety.

'Concern' for woman missing from Leeds

Police in West Yorkshire say they are concerned for the safety of a 32-year-old woman missing from Leeds.

Kelly Hargreaves was reported missing on Monday morning and is believed to be in the Leeds area.

She's described as white, 5ft 8ins tall and very slim with brown hair.

Officers are currently searching the city centre and nearby.

Bradford cinema restoration project receives £959k grant

A project to transform a derelict 1930s cinema into a live music venue in Bradford has been awarded a grant of almost £1m.

Bradford Live has secured the money from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The building, once one of the largest cinemas in Britain with 3,318 seats, has been empty for about 20 years. It is not listed but is in a conservation area.

It's hoped the £959,500 will go towards giving the building a long-term future.

Girl, 13, in hospital after being hit by car in Leeds

A 13-year-old girl has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car in Leeds.

She has been taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

Woman injured in climbing fall

A woman had to be airlifted to hospital after falling while climbing in North Yorkshire.

The 21-year-old, from the Durham area, sustained serious injuries, at the Wainstones, a popular climbing area on the moors above Stokesley.

Volunteers from the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team were able to drive over fields to within about 200m from the crag along with a paramedic from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

She was treated at the scene then carried on a mountain rescue stretcher to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and transported to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital.

Yorkshire Boots stores switch from plastic bags to paper

Retail giant Boots has vowed to ditch plastic bags in all its stores by next year, replacing them with paper ones.

The company said 53 stores, including shops in Sheffield's Meadowhall Shopping Centre, at Leeds Trinity and in York's Coney Street, will lose plastic bags at checkouts from today.

However the Health and beauty chain will continue to charge customers for the new unbleached brown bags, despite them not falling under the plastic bag tax.

The recycled brown bags cost 5p, 7p and 10p, depending on size, and the company said all profits will be donated to BBC Children in Need.

Managing director Seb James said the decision means 900 tonnes of plastic will be removed from his stores as a result.

Sir Gary Verity resignation: Investigation updates due

Updates on two investigations into Welcome to Yorkshire are due to be given to a meeting of the tourism organisation's board later.

The inquiries were set up after the resignation of Sir Gary Verity (pictured) which came amid allegations about his expenses and behaviour towards colleagues.

Sir Gary, who resigned on health grounds, paid back £40,000 expenses before stepping down last March.

When his resignation was announced, Sir Gary said he had tried to "set the highest standards of personal performance and leadership".

In April, the tourism organisation announced the investigations looking into Sir Gary's expenses and behaviour since his appointment in 2008.

Two taken to hospital after Bradford blaze

A teenager and a woman have been taken to hospital following a house fire in Bradford.

Emergency crews were called out last night to a property on Cemetery Road in Lidget Green.

Crews from Fairweather Green, Bradford and Odsal tackled the blaze, which started in a bedroom of the house.

One male teenager was treated for burns to his hands and the effects of breathing in smoke.

A woman at the property was also treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

A 13-year-old boy has gone missing from West Yorkshire, police say.

Paul Powell was reported missing from school in Halifax on Friday and was last seen near Odsal Stadium in Bradford at about 21:00 that night.

He is described as black, 5ft 1in tall, of stocky build, with brown eyes and black hair.

Officers say when last seen he was wearing black jogging bottoms with white stripes and a grey coat.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the police.
