In the early hours of Wednesday, it was reported that a street in York had been cordoned off after an ATM was ripped out of the wall.

Police have now confirmed that thieves targeted a second cashpoint in the city as well as a third in the Harrogate area.

North Yorkshire Police believe the incidents are linked, with four or five men involved.

At about 01:20, police were called to reports of a break-in at Starbeck Post Office, on the High Street, with the cash machine inside the building forced open and money stolen.

Then, at 03:56, officers received reports of a break-in at the Post Office on York's Colliergate, where it's believed thieves targeted the cash machine.

At 06:23, staff arriving for work at the Co-Op on York's Hull Road reported damage to shutters, though no money was taken from the cashpoint.

Anyone with information about these incidents is being asked to contact police.

Chairman of York Retail Form Phil Pinder said: “The turnover of businesses is very high, someone’s always prepared to have a go on the Shambles.

She has now been nominated for The National Police Bravery Awards and will attend a reception and ceremony in London in July.

West Yorkshire Police Federation Chairman Brian Booth said: "PC Shahid risked her own safety to protect a young boy in grave danger, the stolen car was still moving and who knows what would have unfolded if she had not stepped in."

St Mary's church on Coppergate will host Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience from 5 July.

Whirlpool told to recall dryers in 'unprecedented' move

The government is to serve a recall notice on Whirlpool over concerns about the safety of its tumble dryers.

Engineer
BBC

The "unprecedented step" means the company will have to recall hundreds of thousands of appliances over fears they pose a fire safety risk.

It comes after 5.3 million dryers under Whirlpool's Hotpoint, Creda and Indesit brands required modifying after several fires, including a tower block blaze.

Whirlpool said safety was its "number one priority".

The company estimates that between 300,000 and 500,000 faulty products could still be in UK homes, three years after the first safety notice was issued - although there is no definitive register to judge the accuracy of the estimate.

Last year, the BBC's Watchdog Live consumer programme uncovered cases in which machines had caught fire even after being fixed.

And in April, the Office for Product Safety and Standards published a report, urging Whirlpool to improve its risk management, and"reach affected consumers in more creative ways"to minimise the risk of faulty machines still being in people's homes.

The recall notice was announced in the Commons by business minister Kelly Tolhurst after former Conservative minister Andrew Griffiths raised "great concern" over Whirlpool's "straightness".
