Man arrested for attack on paramedic and police officer

A driver's been arrested after a paramedic and a police officer were attacked following a collision involving several cars.

Both the ambulance service and police say they were called to the junction of Stockwell Street and Union Street in Leek last night.

Paramedics say they assessed and treated seven people at the scene and one man had to be taken for hospital treatment.

Police say three cars were involved in the crash and several parked cars were damaged.

They say a 28-year-old man, of no fixed above, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and assaulting an emergency service worker.

Woman found dead with dog named

A woman who was found dead at a house in Derbyshire has been named as 77-year-old Dorothy Bowyer.

The body of a dog was also found inside the property on Western Lane, Buxworth, last week.

Police were called shortly after 04:00 on Thursday 14 February.

They later arrested 25-year-old William Blunsdon from Buxworth, who's since been charged with murder and criminal damage.

Man hurt family who helped 'woman in need'

A man who attacked a couple and their teenage son after they stepped in to help "a woman in need" has been jailed.

The family went to help the woman after she was slapped by Patrick Murray, of Alderwood Walk, Cheetham Hill, as she sat in her car outside their home.

The 65-year-old fled but returned, armed with a plank and helped by two others, and attacked the family.

He was sentenced to four years two months in prison after admitting affray and assault at Manchester Crown Court.

A 17-year-old boy, who helped Murray and cannot be named for legal reasons, was jailed for for 18 months for the same offences.

Another man involved in the attack has yet to be identified, Greater Manchester Police said.

Manchester heavyweight Tyson Fury has signed a deal with an American network worth a reported £80m.

The deal, understood to cover Fury's next five fights, will see his bouts screened on ESPN in the United States while remaining on BT Sport in the UK.

Fury believes the deal makes a rematch with Deontay Wilder "more makeable".

But Fury, Wilder and IBF, WBA and WBO champion Anthony Joshua now work with rival US broadcasters, making future negotiations arguably more difficult.

Ambulance service fails high-risk call target

Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) has failed a target of attending 50% of high-risk calls in some parts of the region within seven minutes, according to new statistics.

The timings apply to rural areas of the Colne, Dearne and Holme Valleys.

The response rates decrease even further, with Meltham at 20%, Marsden at 17% and Clayton West at 5%.

Councillor Charles Greaves, leader of the Independent Group on Kirklees Council and ward member for Holme Valley North, said: "We have lower ambulance cover, a larger geographical area, poor road links, longer arrival times and longer A&E journey times compared to anywhere else in West Yorkshire".

John McSorley, Divisional Commander of A&E Operations at YAS NHS Trust, said: "Overall demand for emergency ambulances is increasing year-on-year and this pressure is reflected in all NHS services across the whole country".

The whole of the M6 has reopened in Cheshire after the earlier crash involving six lorries and several cars.

Diesel was spilled across the motorway although no-one was thought to be seriously hurt, police said, after the collision near Crewe between J16 and J17.

Bald puppies dumped at Halifax vets

Three bald puppies are recovering after they were dumped in two separate incidents at a Halifax vets.

Two puppies were brought into West Mount Vets on Pellon Lane at about 17:30 on 7 February.

The third animal was brought in at about 17:00 on 14 February.

The man who brought the dogs in both incidents is described as wearing a tracksuit and a hoodie.

The puppies are recovering from shock, but their fur is returning, according to the RSPCA.

Insp Sarah Bagley said: "It’s unbelievable that someone has dumped these puppies in this way, not once but twice.

"I am very concerned about any other animals this person may have in their care."

Prisoner 'sexually assaulted' before death, inquest told

A pathologist called in after a prisoner was found hanging in his cell at Haverigg Prison in July 2016 found evidence that he had been subject to "a serious sexual assault", an inquest at Carlisle Crown Court has heard.

Keith Abbott, 32, from Edge Lane in Liverpool, had been under a care plan because of his mental health history while on remand, but this plan closed before he was transferred to the Cumbrian jail to serve a four-year sentence.

The Home Office pathologist, Dr Alison Armour (pictured), also told the jury she found other unusual features, including a "complex and intricate ligature".

Because of all the unusual features," she concluded, "I could not exclude that an unlawful act had occurred in the death of Keith Abbott in the process of hanging."

Police made a number of arrests after Mr Abbott's death, but after an investigation no charges were brought.

The inquest continues.

A 10-year-old boy says he is "too scared" to walk to school after racist graffiti was daubed outside his home.

David Yamba found "No Blacks" painted on doors inside his block of flats in Salford on 8 February, five days after his family had moved in.

His father Jackson reported it to Greater Manchester Police on the same day but said on Saturday they "still haven't been here to investigate".

The force has since apologised and said it would review its approach.

An elderly man's died after being hit by a car.

The 83-year-old man was on Sandbach Road, Congleton, Cheshire, when police say he was struck.

He died in hospital from his injuries and officers are appealing for any witnesses.

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with attacking an on-duty police officer in what's been described by police as an unprovoked assault.

They say the 30-year-old victim was in uniform on Brooklyn Street, Crewe, on Thursday night when he was asked if he wanted to buy a drill by three men.

When he refused, he was attacked and is still in hospital after suffering a head injury.

Officers say the 15-year-old suspect from Crewe has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and assault by beating of an emergency service worker and will appear before magistrates this Thursday.

They add that they've also arrested a 17-year-old boy, also from the town, over the attack and he's been released under investigation.

Police say they were called at 12:22 after the collision between junctions 16 and 17, near Crewe, although they believe no-one's been seriously hurt.

However, they say a lot of diesel's been spilled over the motorway and it'll take at least a couple of hours to clear.

Officers say one lane should be reopened soon past the scene of the crash.
