Reprieve expected for Surrey recycling centres

Plans to close rubbish tips in Surrey could be scrapped in favour of better education around recycling, councillors have been told.

Surrey County Council cabinet members decided to halt the closures earlier this year and commissioned a task group to review the use of the sites following a public outcry against the plans.

On Monday the group reported back to councillors, and said it was looking towards a recommendation not to close the four sites in Bagshot, Cranleigh, Dorking and Warlingham, and that more money could be saved by improving recycling.

The closure would have affected an estimated 54,000 households, making savings of around £1m a year.

Councillor Andrew Povey, who has been leading the cross-party task group, told the Communities, Environment and Highways Select Committee: “In terms of largest savings, they would come from reducing the amount of waste or increasing the amount of recycling.”
