Police chief warns of criminal record delays after Brexit

European criminal record checks could take 11 times as long after Brexit, West Midlands Ch Supt Richard Baker has warned.

He told a Strategic Policing and Crime Board the process of checking on the criminal history of a European national takes about six days at the moment, but that could take as long as 66 days in future.

Tourism plan aims to build on Peaky Blinders effect

An action plan's been launched to try and capitalise on the tourism benefits for the West Midlands from the TV show Peaky Blinder and the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

The West Midlands Growth Company says its strategy aims to generate 19,000 new jobs in the region and raise the value of tourism to £13.7bn.

Its plans include promoting the area to overseas markets and making the most of events such as Coventry being UK City of Culture in 2021 and Birmingham's Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Former arts school 'thriving' after being at risk

BBC News has been looking a what happened to some of the listed as being 'at risk' in previous years.

It includes the Moseley School of Art in Birmingham which was built in 1899 and closed in 1975.

The Victorian Society listed the building in 2010 and, in 2017, owners Moseley Muslim Community Association (MMCA) secured £1.7m to renovate the site.

Now it is a thriving community and arts centre once again, the MMCA said.

Wider roll-out of bleed control kits for stab victims

New specialist first aid kits which could help save the lives of stabbing victims have been announced for the West Midlands.

Funding for the anti-bleed kits has been announced by West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson.

Fifty units were rolled out in Birmingham in June, with 350 more to be made available in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull and Coventry.

The move follows a campaign by Lynne Baird after her son, Daniel Baird, 26, was stabbed to death in the city in 2017.

Retired train to be used for cutting-edge research

A 40-year-old train has become the centrepiece of a cutting-edge railway research project, pioneered by the University of Birmingham.

The recently-retired high-speed model is being used to find new ways of modernising the railway, including moves to do away with diesel-powered engines.

Alex Burrows from the university said the train would allow research to be carried out in a "real-life test environment".

He said the research would primarily be around the decarbonisation of the railway system such as hydrogen fuel cells and battery technology.

"Our research is world-leading," he added. "We are one of the largest specialist railway research and innovation centres, and what we're doing is going to shape the railways of the future."

A police officer who was seriously hurt when he was run over by a stolen police car has been released from hospital after more than a month of treatment.

PC Gareth Phillips suffered potentially life-changing injuries when he was punched to the ground and hit by the car in Moseley, Birmingham, last month.

On Tuesday, West Midlands Police tweeted to say he would be recovering at home, adding "he’s still got a long battle ahead of him, and our thoughts remain with him and his family".

Earlier this month, Mubashar Hussain, 29, of no fixed address, admitted causing grievous bodily harm and was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing set for 15 October.

Birmingham and Midlands Velo event brought forward

The date of next year's 100-mile bike ride across the West Midlands has been brought forward.

Event organisers of the Velo Birmingham and Midlands said the 21 June date was to accommodate the professional road cycling racing calendar in 2020.

Thousands of cyclists took part in the route in May which started in Digbeth, Birmingham, taking in Solihull, Bedworth, Coventry and Sandwell.

The event also brought out big crowds, but also attracted criticism from numerous residents about widespread road closures with some saying they felt trapped in their homes.

A spokesperson said: "Whilst there is no guarantee we will be successful in our bid to host a pro race in 2020, we have taken the early decision to move the date in order to align with the UCI calendar and deliver on our vision."

Entries will open on 1 October to previous participants and on 3 October to everyone who has pre-registered.

Knife bins are being installed at four Warwickshire Police stations as part of a nationwide crackdown on knife crime.

There were 272 knife-related incidents in the county in the 12 months to March this year as knife crime rose 8% across England and Wales.

The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner has said civil disobedience resulting from a no-deal Brexit is likely to stretch police resources in the region.

The government was forced by MPs to disclose a document revealing there could be protests, delays at ports and food and medicine shortages.

The government says Operation Yellowhammer represents a worst case scenario, mainly based on the assumptions of Theresa May's administration.

Labour PCC David Jamieson told BBC WM the force may be called upon to provide mutual aid to other police forces across the country.

"It may take police away from their duties here in the West Midlands," he added.

Rail improvement package unveiled

Plans for a £3.5bn improvement programme to transform the region’s rail network are being shared from today.
