Documentary series to go behind the scenes of the V&A

Victoria and Albert Museum
PA Media

A new BBC documentary series is to give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at London's Victoria & Albert museum.

Secrets Of The Museum will pull back the curtain on the inner workings of the institution in South Kensington.

The six-part series, due to air on BBC Two next year, will follow the V&A's specialist teams and reveal the "tricks of their trade", the BBC said, as they go about acquiring, cleaning, conserving, loaning and displaying some of the museum's more than two million objects.

Some of the rare and valuable items at the museum include Charles Dickens' original manuscripts, Brexit-inspired vases made by the artist Grayson Perry, Kylie Minogue's travelling wardrobe and a record-breaking bike belonging to Olympian cyclist Bradley Wiggins.

Tristram Hunt, director of the V&A, said he hoped the series "will inspire a new generation of designers and makers, museum-goers and day-trippers to fall in love with the V&A and its remarkable collection."

Mayor calls on council to approve Holocaust memorial plan

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Sadiq Khan has called on Westminster Council to approve plans for a Holocaust memorial to sit next to the Houses of Parliament.

London's mayor said Victoria Tower Gardens, the park beside Britain’s seat of government, was the right place to commemorate the horrors of the Holocaust.

But local campaigners oppose the use of green space, and say the small park would be dominated by the building. More than 12,000 people have signed a petition opposing the memorial.

Earlier this month, a letter from council leader Nickie Aiken to the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation, revealed by campaigners under Freedom of Information law, suggested that the application “was heading towards an unfavourable recommendation”.

The mayor has now urged Westminster Council not to reject the plans, and to allow the memorial “to take its rightful place in the heart of the capital” close to the Houses of Parliament.

But Clare Annamalai, a spokeswoman for Save Victoria Tower Gardens, said the mayor’s intervention was “inappropriate” and “politically motivated”.

A spokesperson for Westminster City Council said: “The city council has made it very clear that the decision regarding this application, like all that come before the authority, will be made on planning grounds after careful assessment of all the representations received. No decision has been taken.”

Teenager 'would have got beat up if he refused drugs work'

Ben Woolvin

BBC South West Home Affairs correspondent

A teenager who prosecutors say was being used by London-based drug dealers to deliver heroin and cocaine in Cornwall - a so-called county lines operation - told police he “would have got beat up” if he had refused to work.

The jury at Truro Crown Court heard the teenager from London, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found by police at a flat in Bodmin last year. He told police he agreed to work for a man who he owed money for cannabis.

During a police interview played to the court, the teenager described how he was picked up in a car, brought clothes with him and knew he would be going away, but had not been told exactly what he would be doing.

Nine people are on trial, with four of them accused of human trafficking offences.

A barrister representing a man who denies arranging for the teenager to be exploited said the youth had come up with a story to stop police pursuing him for dealing drugs. The teenager denied this.

The case continues.

Services to remember Marchioness disaster victims

Marchioness memorial
PA Media

Services will be held at Southwark Cathedral to mark the 30th anniversary of the Marchioness disaster.

Fifty-one people died when the pleasure boat sank after being struck by a dredger on the River Thames on 20 August 1989.

A vigil will be held at 20:05 BST, which will include a procession from the cathedral to a location between Cannon Street and Southwark Bridge where a service will be conducted by the bishop of Southwark.

On Tuesday, a Eucharist will be held at 12:45, during which flowers will be laid at the cathedral's memorial.

No tickets are required for either service and anybody attending the vigil is encouraged to bring along natural petals to throw in the Thames and a candle in a jam jar.

#GreaterLondoner: Brenda Meadows, 87

Brenda Meadows
BBC

I’m still alive after nearly dying. I’m 87 and proud of it.

My mum used to say I was “a stubborn moo” because they were called to the hospital three times when I was born and were told I wouldn’t last the night. But I did.

Two car accidents.

Three miscarriages.

One premature baby which passed away.

And a few other catastrophes, but I’m still here. It makes you stronger.

My husband used to call me ‘Mrs Bossy Boots’ and ‘Mrs Nosy Parker’.

Now I have no more family left in England.

I’ve worked with the Scout Association for more than 65 years.

Because of the tragedy of our own children, I just wanted to help.

It just gives me a lot of happiness to think I’m doing something for someone.

My reward is people’s faces when they smile.

I started volunteering at this food bank because it’s near where I’ve lived all my life.

I hope that through my church work and scout work people are feeling accepted, happy and secure. They can’t get rid of me.

I was told ‘there’s no rest for the wicked’ and ‘only the good die young’.

I write poetry and in a couple of weeks I’m going to do stand up comedy about old age.

There’s no reason not to enjoy life.

Brenda Meadows, 87, Hammersmith & Fulham
