Recently Padgett handed himself in to police and today Recorder Patrick Palmer sentenced him to 32 months in prison for the break-in, and another four months to follow for failing to attend court.

Hannah Cockroft 'woken up' by losing in 2018

Halifax's five-time Paralympic champion Hannah Cockroft has said losing for the first time in her career "woke her up".

Cockroft was denied gold for the only time in her senior career at last year's European Championships in Berlin, finishing second behind Great Britain team-mate Kare Adenegan.

But the 27-year-old came back to win the T34 100m and 800m at the World Para-Athletics Championships in Dubai last week, taking her tally of world titles to 12.

"I kind of lost my motivation last year and that showed in my performances. I won my first silver medal, which I don't really think of as a win," said Cockroft.

"Everything slipped. I went off to do other things like presenting on Countryfile and started to think about life beyond sport.

"Being beaten really woke me up to how much I love racing, how much I love winning, and how much I love what I do," she added.

Last night the Students Union passed a motion to lobby the prince to step down.

It follows Prince Andrew's appearance on BBC Newsnight in what critics called a "car-crash" interview.

In the interview, the Queen's third child said he still did not regret his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein - who took his own life in August while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges in the US.

The university itself said Prince Andrew's "enthusiasm for innovation and entrepreneurship" was a "natural fit" with its work.

Halifax gets tourism boost thanks to hit BBC show

A BBC TV show has sparked a tourism boom in West Yorkshire.

Gentleman Jack
BBC

Gentleman Jack, starring Suranne Jones, telling the story of Anne Lister, often called the "first modern lesbian", was watched by almost six million people each week earlier this year.

As a result, some people have travelled from as far afield as Australia to see her former stomping ground of Shibden Hall in Halifax, according to Calderdale Council.

Her historic family home still stands today and has had to extend its opening hours to meet a huge increase in demand.

In August last year, 2,579 people visited the 15th Century building, but in the same month this year there were 14,419 visits, according to Calderdale Council.

Zohrah Zancudi, from Calderdale Council, said Gentleman Jack was having a “phenomenal” impact on the area, placing it “firmly on the global stage”.

Bronte Museum secure 'Little book' for £666,000

A book written by Charlotte Bronte at the age of 14 will return "home" after being bought at auction by the Bronte Society.

The miniature work, called The Young Men's Magazine, will go to the Parsonage Museum in the Brontes' old home in Haworth, West Yorkshire.

It was bought in Paris for €780,000 (£666,000).

The museum lost out on the book when it last went under the hammer in 2011.

The work is one of six "little books" written by Charlotte, the eldest of the three sisters, in 1830. Five are known to survive, and the Bronte Parsonage Museum already holds the other four.

Huddersfield University urged to cut Prince Andrew links

There are calls for the University of Huddersfield to remove the Duke of York from his post as chancellor, following concerns about his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Former Huddersfield University lecturer Dr Stephen Dorril says it must end its association with Prince Andrew.

"I think it's now become deeply embarrassing. This issue's been raised a number of times and the university's refused to do anything about it and just remained silent," he said.

"But now it's across the newspapers this is going to go on for some time."

Dr Dorril spoke after Prince Andrew's interview with BBC Newsnight was aired on Saturday.

The interview, during which the prince denied having sex with then 17-year-old girl Virginia Giuffre, has been described as a 'car crash' and 'excruciating' by former Buckingham Palace press officer Dickie Arbiter.

The University of Huddersfield said it had "long ties" to the prince and that following Buckingham Palace's "emphatic denial" of the allegations it had "nothing further to add".

The rare manuscript, which is dated 19 August 1830 and is no bigger than a matchbox, features three hand-written stories.

It is one of six written by Charlotte, with five known to survive.

The Bronte Parsonage Museum, in Haworth will be bidding, as it already holds the other four and hopes to complete the collection.

It's expected to fetch at least £650,000.

Yorkshire and Lincolnshire train services hit by flooding

BBC News Travel

There are several problems on Yorkshire and Lincolnshire's rail services just now due to flooding.

TransPennine Express services are currently suspended between Sheffield and Scunthorpe due to flooding in the Kirk Sandall area, near Doncaster.

Train operator Northern is also unable to run services between Doncaster and Goole due to the Kirk Sandall flooding.

Northern trains between Doncaster and Scunthorpe will run at a reduced speed, not calling at Kirk Sandall.

Passengers needing to stop at Kirk Sandall are being asked to use rail replacement buses between Doncaster and Goole.

Disruption on these routes are expected to continue for the rest of the day, according to National Rail Enquiries.

Meanwhile, rail services are also affected between Sheffield and Lincoln Central/Gainsborough Central/Retford/Worksop, and also between Leeds and Lincoln Central.

This is due to flooding near Kiveton Park, which means trains have to run at a reduced speed, with services delayed up to 30 minutes, cancelled or revised.

"Sub-17 felt like it was going to be next year's goal," she added.

"It still felt a little out of my league. I haven't pushed that quick ever, so I'm not sure how I just did it."
