Saving the Solway haaf netters
Solway's haaf net fishers have warned that the thousand-year-old practice could disappear in a generation if they are not given legal protection. A project to document the history and lives of the small group of half netters was presented at the Devil's Porridge Museum in Annan in Dumfries and Galloway. The haaf netters hope the exhibition will attract interest in the traditional fishing technique, which is believed to have been brought to Scotland by the Vikings in 900AD. Economic changes since the 1970s have made the once profitable trade in salmon fishing on the Solway dwindle, while recent drives to conserve the numbers of fish have also hit the community hard.
