The roof and clock tower have been undergoing renovations for the past year which saw the Victoria Hall closed while the roof of the auditorium was replaced.

A further £10m worth of refurbishments will be focused on the interior.

Leeds City Council is paying for the work from its capital fund.

That does not include the organ and seating which will require an additional £2m that it intends to raise via a public campaign.

We're proud to be investing in this wonderful building and ensuring that it remains part of the story of Leeds for centuries to come."

The bins are part of Operation Sceptre, a week-long national campaign against knife crime.

North Yorkshire Police say they allow people to hand over weapons "safely and anonymously".

Det Supt Fran Naughton said: "Operation Sceptre provides an important opportunity to continue the conversation about knife crime, helping children and young people understand the dangers and potentially fatal consequences of carrying a knife, whilst providing support for them and their families.”

BreakingSirius plans for North York Moors mine suffer blow

BBC Business News

Sirius Minerals has been forced to put on hold plans to issue a $500bn (£403bn) bond for a fertiliser mine it is developing in the North York Moors.

It paused the bond issue last month, but has now said it cannot issue it, blaming "market conditions", including Brexit and lack of government support.

It will now undergo a six-month review of four different options for a new financing plan to resume the project.

The company's shares fell by 63% in early trading on Tuesday morning.

The mine is due to open in 2021 and create more than 1,000 jobs.

Copter pilot's action avoids drone near-miss 'disaster'

A drone being flown within 3m of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) helicopter almost caused the "most unthinkable disaster", the charity has said.

The helicopter was returning to the YAA base at Nostell Air Support Unit near Wakefield at about 18:50 yesterday when the pilot had to avoid a "direct collision".

The drone was being flown at about 1,300ft, which is more than three times the legal limit for operators, according to the YAA.

Steve Waudby, YAA chief pilot, said: “We cannot stress enough the seriousness of what happened last night. The consequences don’t bear thinking about if a direct strike had occurred.

"Whether the operator is aware or not, they have put the lives of our crew in extreme danger."

YAA staff had spent most of yesterday working with the Civil Aviation Authority creating a drone awareness film, the charity added.

Watch: Homophobic hate crime charges fall as reports soar

Fewer people are being prosecuted for homophobic hate crime, despite police calling on victims to come forward.

A BBC Radio 5 Live investigation found the numbers of people reporting such crimes across the UK more than doubled in the last five years to more than 13,000.

Charges or court summons fell by 10% during the same period.

Lily Cherry, from Woodseats in Sheffield, spoke to the BBC about her experiences:

Reports of homophobic hate crime rise in Yorkshire

The rise in the number of reports of homophobic hate crimes to two of Yorkshire's police forces are among the most dramatic in the country, figures suggest.

It comes as new figures show fewer people are being prosecuted despite rising numbers of potential victims coming forward.

West Yorkshire Police has seen reports increase from 172 to 961 over the past five years, while South Yorkshire police has seen reports rise from 73 to 375.

Angela Williams, of West Yorkshire Police, said rising reports were in part down to "improvements in the way we record crime and the fact that many victims have the confidence to come forward".

The proportion of crimes resulting in a charge or summons, however, fell over the same time, from 19% to 4% in West Yorkshire and from 10% to 3% in South Yorkshire.

Across the UK as a whole recorded reports of homophobic abuse increased from 5,807 in 2014-15, to 13,530 in 2018-19.

But during the same period, the number of prosecutions fell from 1,157 to 1,058 - from 20% of all reports to 8%.

The National Police Chiefs' Council said those cases often involved a lack of witnesses and evidence.
